To alert folks to an interesting article about IL prospects over on Fangraphs, I was going to use the title "Interesting data about prospects over at Fangraphs," but decided that their title was too good to skip. I might grab some readers with a variety of interests.
Looking at the Pirates' IL starting pitching prospects, you see that Locke is performing the best. Few walks, lots of strike outs, a BABIP that's close to normal, and an ERA that's right in line with his FIP. In contrast, both Owens and Wilson have been blessed with really low BABIPs, suggesting that they might be in line for some regression.
| Name | Team | Age | IP | K% | BB% | BABIP | ERA | FIP |
| Jeff Locke | Pirates | 24 | 61.0 | 21.3% | 4.4% | .303 | 3.10 | 3.00 |
| Rudy Owens | Pirates | 24 | 72.2 | 17.8% | 3.5% | .239 | 2.35 | 3.94 |
| Justin Wilson | Pirates | 24 | 61.2 | 23.1% | 12.3% | .270 | 4.23 | 4.42 |
Among the hitters I was impressed about how much Clement was tearing it up. That isolated power of 0.241 might be handy someplace in the majors. The BABIP suggests a wRC+ of 168 is not likely to be sustainable, but you can dream.
| Name | Age | PA | BB% | K% | AVG | OBP | SLG | ISO | BABIP | wRC+ |
| Jeff Clement | 28 | 181 | 12.2% | 19.3% | .316 | .398 | .557 | 0.241 | .368 | 168 |
| Jordy Mercer | 25 | 198 | 9.1% | 18.7% | .303 | .379 | .417 | 0.114 | .368 | 121 |
| Starling Marte | 23 | 216 | 5.6% | 20.8% | .270 | .327 | .469 | 0.199 | .327 | 119 |
| Brandon Boggs | 29 | 199 | 13.1% | 24.6% | .220 | .323 | .351 | 0.131 | .280 | 91 |
| Matt Hague | 26 | 158 | 5.7% | 15.8% | .278 | .325 | .333 | 0.056 | .325 | 87 |
I've left out some data to make things easier to read, so hop on over to Fangraphs if you need a fuller, more nerdly experience.
