In order for the Pirates' lineup to really look better, Starling Marte will have to be brought up from AAA. That is, unless the front office is really into getting TWO major trade pieces: one leadoff-type and one masher. I doubt that changes on this order are part of the plan.
The more that's said about Upton, the more I doubt that's going to happen. Quentin would be cheap and effective: have you seen this guy's OBP? The team's also looking at Victorino. This is more challenging; he would bat second, I'd guess, and the whole lineup would be geared for OBP and speed. Here are a couple lineups that would be pretty big improvements, in two entirely different ways:
R Marte, LF
S Walker, 2B
R McCutchen, CF
L Jones, 1B
R Quentin, RF
L Alvarez, 3B
R Barajas, C
R Barmes, SS
This lineup looks pretty balanced and adds some power. This assumes Marte is ML-ready.
R Marte, RF
S Victorino, LF
R McCutchen, CF
L Jones, 1B
S Walker, 2B
L Alvarez, 3B
R Barajas, C
R Barmes, SS
You can see that this one is all D and speed, but does improve the L/R balance a bit. Switch-hitters are handy. The only hole here remains the SS, but as Barmes has saved a game or two with his glove recently, it looks like the club will stick with him (mainly) and cut their losses with his stick.
