The Pirates have gotten next-to-nothing from the SS position as well as the leadoff position. Gordon could fit at the top of the lineup, killing two birds with one stone. Gordon, the son of former closer Tom Gordon, was considered a borderline top 25 prospect as recently as 2011. He was called up in midseason 2011, where he went on to post a .304/.325/.362 line with 24 SB(7 CS). Pretty good for a rookie, eh? However, this year he has been, arguably, WORSE than Barmes! He has just a .562 OPS while playing below average defense according to Bref. Although the 30 SB certainly offset his lack of power, hes gonna need to draw more walks and play better defense to become a valuable starting Shortstop.
The Pirates acqusition of Wandy Rodriguez makes somebody expendable and that somebody will be Bedard or Correia. Correia has certainly improved his stock with his recent 7 starts by going 6-0 and probably has more appeal to a west coast team as he has spent almost his entire career there.
In the end, we are trding a rental whose value will never be higher for a POTENTIAL impact player. Gordon still needs a bit of seasoning and is injured anyway so he wont be able to contribute immediately but if he was perfect he wouldnt be available. Let him spend the rest of the year in the minors then invite him to ST to battle Barme for the starting job.
