just finished another lousy outing, 5 innings 6 hits and 7 walks. In his last four starts he has issued 19 BB against 15 K's. He gave up more homers (6) in July than he gave up in all of April, May and June combined. Am I concerned? Hell yeah. He is rapidly approaching his innings total for last season, 171, and is struggling against pretty weak hitting teams.
The lack of control may just be something in his mechanics, but a lack of command this time of year often is a sign of fatigue. After all we have had a pretty hot summer, and believe it or not it can take its toll on thin pitchers even more than big fat guys like David Wells
who thrived in hot conditions.
Last season if you remember Mac faded in September, with an ERA of nearly 5. It's obvious the Front Office is onto this problem, picking up Wandy even though they have a few other holes to fill.
Personally I think this calls for a rebel ballsy move of epic proportion. I say we let Bedard and Mac take turns skipping a start every other week. Mac skips a turn next week, Bedard the next. Bring up some AAA pitcher to replace them, put Corriea in long relief roles. I feel, and this is my opinion only, not saying it's correct, that by doing this it will give us a chance when we make the post season to have a real shot at winning with pitchers who are not exhausted and dead armed.
In closing, this Post will self destuct if Mac pitches a complete game shutout next week, and being a true Bucs fan I hope that happens.
