Let's be clear: I'm a big Starling Marte fan. But I feel compelled to ask, "How does he compare to Justin Upton?"
Since Marte has not played in the majors, we can't learn much from that. But we can look at their performances in the minors. A comparison of their minor league careers suggests the following conclusions. Upton had better plate discipline, better power, and a modestly better strike out rate. Upton is an above average mlb right fielder; Marte is, by all accounts, an above average minor league center fielder (with a good arm). This year Upton is a slightly above average hitter; last year he was well above average. As a rookie, he was an average hitter; one would have to be an even bigger fan of Marte than I am to predict that level of success for Starling this year. Marte: Better fielding plus better defense and much cheaper for much longer versus Upton: better hitting and very good defense in the problem areas (left and right) plus much more expensive and a big hit to the farm system. My take is that the Bucs could not affort to pay McCutchen and Upton, no deal. Yours?
