Pirates' Minor League Roundup: Gerrit Cole and Chris Leroux Both Struggle

Wednesday's roundup of minor league action, not including the team that got throttled by a minor league pitcher in San Diego . . . .

-P- Chase d'Arnaud plated the go-ahead run with a two-out double in the bottom of the 8th and Indianapolis went on to a 7-5 win over Louisville. D'Arnaud finished 4-5 with three runs. Alex Presley went 3-4, Dallas McPherson went 2-3 with two walks, and Matt Hague hit a game-tying HR, his 4th, in the 7th. After a string of strong starts, Chris Leroux had his second straight weak one. He allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk in 5.1 IP, and somehow gave up two longballs to Willie Harris (who later got ejected while batting with a full count in the top of the 9th). On the plus side, Leroux fanned nine. Duke Welker made his first appearance since going on the disabled list with forearm tightness and fanned the two batters he faced. Jo-Jo Reyes got the win with two scoreless innings. (Should we be afraid?) Brock Holt allowed the box score to pretend that he went hitless, ending his hitting streak at ten, so the rest of the International League wouldn't lose all hope.

-P- Gerrit Cole also had a good run end, but Altoona nevertheless demolished Trenton, 14-2. Cole struggled in the 1st, allowing the two runs and taking 34 pitches to get three outs. He didn't allow any more runs, but continued to run up the pitch count, coming out after four and two-thirds and 98 pitches. He allowed five hits and four walks, and fanned four. Jason Townsend followed in his AA debut with four and a third scoreless innings. He gave up just two hits and walked none, while fanning two. Quincy Latimore led the offense, going 3-4 with his 15th HR and four RBIs. Matt Curry and Stefan Welch each went 2-4 with a double, and Charlie Cutler went 2-4 with a double and a triple.

-P- Bradenton edged Fort Myers, 2-1, behind Kyle Kaminska's second good start. He went seven innings and allowed one run on six hits. He walks none and fanned six. Once again, bear in mind that Kaminska has spent parts of four seasons in high A. The Marauders had only six hits and scored both their runs on a play that included two errors.

-P- A bases-loaded, one-out single by Jose Osuna in the bottom of the 9th scored Alen Hanson and gave West Virginia a 5-4 walkoff win over Charleston. Osuna finished 3-4 with his 35th double and Hanson 2-5 with his 32nd double. Eric Avila went 2-4. RInku Singh was perfect over two and a third innings, striking out four.

-P- State College scored four in the 8th to tie Auburn, 4-4, then went on to a 5-4 win on a 12th inning error. After Clario Perez gave up four early runs, four relievers--Logan Pevny, Kyle Haynes, Josh Smith and Dalton Friend--combined to throw eight four-hit, shutout innings. Friend got the win with three innings in which he allowed one hit and one walk, with three Ks. At this stage he strikes me as a potentially interesting pitcher and, besides, he conjures memories of The Warrior. Samuel Gonzalez went 3-4 with a three-run double that tied the game. Jodaneli Carvajal went 3-6 with a double.

-P- The GCL Pirates had their game against the Phillies suspended in the 3rd inning with the Bucs up, 2-0.

-P- The DSL Pirates1 hammered the Marlins, 9-0. Starter Christian Henriquez went five innings, allowing three hits and two walks, and striking out four. Leandro Rodriguez followed with three one-hit innings. Pablo Reyes and Daniel Arribas each went 2-4, with Reyes adding a double.

-P- The DSL Pirates2 completed Blowout Day in the Dominican by destroying the Phillies, 15-0. Starter Eduardo Vera allowed just two hits over five innings. Gustavo Barrios went 4-6 with a triple and five RBIs. Henrry Rosario went 2-4 with a grand slam--his 3rd HR--and six RBIs. Rodney Polonia had three hits, and Dennis Hurtarte and Angelo Del Castillo each had two.
