Clint Hurdle Hints At Recall Of Chris Leroux

Talking to the media in Cincinnati today, Clint Hurdle suggested that RHP Chris Leroux could be close to helping the Pirates. It's a little out of character for Hurdle to foreshadow roster moves, but the few times he has, things have tended to move pretty quickly.

Leroux spent the first few months of the season on the 60-day DL after straining his right pectoral muscle just before Opening Day. Effective pitching out of the bullpen upon his return, he was moved into a starting role in Indianapolis after Rudy Owens was traded to Houston. In his two appearances as a starter Leroux numbers are 11IP, 8H, 2R, 2BB, 8K. While I think he would be a better option than Kevin Correia to spot start, I'm sure the Pirates will initially use him as a long-man, similar to the role Brad Lincoln originally filled when he was moved to the bullpen.

If you listen to the podcasts, you know I'm a big fan of Leroux. I think he can definitely help this team down the stretch. He also is a darkhorse candidate to be the No. 5 starter next season. Leroux would need to be added to the 40-man if he is brought up, but the Pirates currently have an open spot. If recalled, Chad Qualls would most likely be DFA'd to create room on the 25-man roster.

When rosters are allowed to expand come September 1, the Pirates have a number of players who could be brought up. Jeff Clement and Doug Slaten are two who would also have to be added to the 40-man. There is no shortage of candidates to move off the roster to make room. Qualls, Evan Meek, Daniel McCutchen, Matt Hague and Eric Fryer head the list.
