At some point if all goes well in the next few days or week, a milestone will pass that will be little noted, but should bring a smile to all of our faces. Because at some point in the next week, the Pirates will pass a point where, even if they play as poorly from then on as they did last year at the same point in the season, they will still finish with a winning record.
Last year, the 108 game mark was the last the club saw of .500 at 54-54 with 54 to play. They were in the midst of a 10 game losing streak, and as you all know, they plummeted like a stone to the bottom of the Allegheny the last 54 games of the season, winning just 18 games the rest of the way.
One year later, they sit at 16 games above .500, and going 18-36 the rest of the way would not only be a huge disaster unlikely to occur, with the team playing well, gelling, and having a comparatively weak schedule, but it also would put them at 80-82 for the year, just missing the opportunity to break the dreaded streak we’ve had to endure for the majority of most of our lives.
Just 2 victories in the next 5 games would push us past that threshold. That is the point where I for one will take a deep breath, and conclude it is time to raise the expectations on this season to the next level.
LET’S GO BUCS! RAISE IT!
