Pirates' Minor League Roundup: Justin Wilson Throws a No-Hitter; Gregory Polanco Goes Deep Twice

Stay connected for news and updates

Lots of action on Thursday:

-P- In a game shortened to eight innings, Justin Wilson threw a complete game no-hitter against Charlotte, with Indianapolis winning, 3-0. Wilson walked one, struck out five and faced the minimum 24 batters thanks to a double play. The amazing part is that WIlson could have gone nine; he threw only 86 pitches. This is the second no-hitter for Wilson this year, the first one being a combined effort. Maybe Jeff Locke's promotion lit a fire. Newly demoted Alex Presley went 2-4, Jose Tabata went 1-4 out of the cleanup (?!) spot, and #FreeYamaicoNavarro (there, I said it) went 2-3 with a double and a triple.

-P- Altoona stomped Bowie, 9-4. Matt Curry went 1-2 with his 10th HR, a three-run shot, along with a walk and a sac bunt (boo!). Adalberto Santos broke out of a slump that had seen his average plummet all the way to .371 by going 2-3 with a walk. Ramon Cabrera went 2-5. Juan Cruz made his second rehab start, pitching one scoreless inning with one strikeout. The "real" starter, Kris Johnson, allowed three runs over the next five innings. Vic Black threw a scoreless 9th, walking one and fanning two.

-P- Bradenton lost to Charlotte, 3-1, in a game that was shortened to five and a half innings. Jameson Taillon pitched the five innings, allowing three runs, one earned. He walked two and struck out three. Kirk Singer had a double for the Marauders' only hit.

-P- West Virginia went deep five times in an 8-3 win over Lexington. Gregory Polanco hit a pair, his 14th and 15th, and finished 2-5 with three RBIs. Polanco now trails Alen Hanson, who went 0-3, in OPS by just three points, .916 to .913. Jose Osuna hit his 15th and went 2-4. Dan Gamache went 2-5 with his 32nd double and 5th HR. Taylor Lewis went 2-5 with his 3rd HR. Willy Garcia went 2-5 but didn't hit a HR. Nick Kingham started and went five and two-thirds, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks, and fanning four.

UPDATE: Hanson and Polanco were both hurt in the game and are both considered day-to-day.

-P- State College dropped a 5-3 decision to Auburn. Joely Rodriguez had one of his weaker starts, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk in four innings. He struck out four. Ryan Hafner, just demoted from West Virginia, took the loss, going 2.1 IP and allowing two runs on three hits and a walk, with one K. Chris Diaz went 2-2 with two walks, Jared Lakind went 2-4 with a double, and Derek Trent hit his 1st HR.

-P- The GCL Pirates beat the Braves, 7-1. Five pitchers, including the still-rehabbing Aaron Pribanic, combined to allow just four hits. Colten Brewer went one and two-thirds, allowing two hits and a walk, and fanning three. Elvis Escobar went 3-4 and Max Moroff went 3-5 with a double.

-P- No box score was available for the DSL Pirates1, who were scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Red Sox.

-P- The DSL Pirates2 took a 4-0 lead into the 9th and hung on to beat the Cubs2, 4-3. Angelo Del Castillo went 3-4 with his 2nd HR and three RBIs. Carlos Ozuna went 2-3, Yunior Aquiles went 2-2, and Julio Perez hit his 4th HR.
