Jared Hughes Releases Statement After Brandon Phillips Repeats Allegation

Stay connected for news and updates

Well, it sounds like this Jared Hughes / Brandon Phillips thing isn't over after all. Before the game on Tuesday, Phillips repeated the allegation that Hughes used a racial epithet during their argument Monday night. Phillips also repeatedly said that he wanted the matter to go away, although of course accusations of racism rarely go away easily. Now Hughes has issued a statement in response.

"In response to Brandon Phillips’ TV interview yesterday prior to the game, I feel compelled to once again make it perfectly clear that I did not make any comment with a racial undertone or connotation during our exchange on Monday night, period. While I cannot repeat everything that I said because I did swear, it is obvious when reviewing the tape that I in no way, shape or form made any remark that was in any way connected to race. It is not how I was raised and not who I am as a person."

There wasn't any apparent evidence on the game broadcast that Hughes said anything racist, although it may be possible that he said things that didn't end up on television. Beyond that, there's little to be said about it -- if Hughes said something racist, Phillips is doing the right thing by calling him out on it, and if he didn't, Hughes has every right to be livid.
