The Pirates finally signed 21st-round draft pick Jordan Steranka, who got an extension past the usual signing deadline because he had mono. (UPDATE: WTM notes that Steranka didn't have an extension; he was allowed to sign after the usual deadline because he was a college senior. My fault.) This probably doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, but Steranka when to Mount Lebanon and Penn State, so he has plenty of local ties. It's too bad for State College and for the Pirates that he couldn't spend the season with the Spikes.
