Danny Arribas Makes Dutch National Team
The 2012 European Baseball Championship begins today, and the roster released yesterday by the Dutch national team includes Pirates catching prospect Danny Arribas. Arribas's selection represents something of a changing of the guard behind the plate for the Dutch team, following the retirement of longtime international stalwart Sidney de Jong. This year's tournament is being held in Rotterdam, and the Dutch haven't missed a final since 1967, so plenty of eyes will be on the 19-year-old Arribas, who hit .308/.387/.388 with the Pirates' affiliate in the DSL this year and threw out 40% of the runners attempting to steal against him. Other members of this year's Dutch team with Pittsburgh connections include former Pirates infielder Yurendell de Caster and 2012 farmhand Shairon Martis. Rick van den Hurk probably also would have been selected, if Indianapolis had not made the playoffs. The Netherlands will face Belgium in their first game today at 7:30 p.m. local time (a.k.a. 1:30 in the afternoon Eastern, if I did the math right).
