Here are some highlights from around the winter leagues. It's hard to draw conclusions from this stuff, but these are the only Pirates who are posting statistics right now, so here goes:
Arizona Fall League: Alex Dickerson has hit well so far, going .343/.410/.429 in 35 at bats. Alen Hanson has a .756 OPS, and Gift Ngoepe, unsurprisingly, hasn't hit much at all. Matt Benedict and Zack Thornton (WTM's dark-horse choice to make the 40-man roster this winter) have pitched well in relief, while Phil Irwin, who's making up for lost time after missing most of the season, allowed six runs in his last start. Tyler Waldron has also pitched in relief. Jameson Taillon was initially in the AFL, but dropped out due to a groin injury. Yearly reminder: The AFL plays as a hitter-friendly league.
Dominican Winter League: Gregory Polanco has been brilliant in a tiny sample so far, hitting .500/.565/1.150 with seven extra-base hits in 20 at bats for Leones del Escogido.
Other than that, there aren't any real prospects who have played more than a game or two in any league. Jose Osuna has had a few at-bats in Venezuela; Joely Rodriguez has pitched one inning in the Dominican. Jhondaniel Medina, who posted impressive numbers in the West Virginia bullpen in 2013 but probably isn't much of a prospect, has made five appearances in Venezuela.
