I've seen some debate on Cutch batting 3rd and here is my take:
Traditionally a teams best hitter bats 3rd. This is 2 fold. 1 he has two hitters with speed & on base percentage in front of him, so he can drive in runs. 2 he has 2 power hitters behind him for protection. This is why stacked teams with lots of money still bat their best hitter 3rd.
New age teams bat their best hitter 2ond. Forward thinking teams are doing this out of need. Much like D-shifts many teams are breaking tradition to even gap between haves/havenots. If you dnt have a lot of fast on base guys to bat 1&2 then you are putting your best hitter at a big disadvantage when coming to plate i.e. 2-out 0-on!
While I would ideally like to see the pirates bat Cutch 3rd, that only works if 1&2 get on base more! Right now he should bat 2ond, and revise based on how Marte & Mercer play.
hopefully by end of year it looks something like this:
4. El Toro
5. Ike Davis (pls pls pls)
9. AJ (pls pls pls)
