Roundup: Free agent bonanza! Pirates still not involved

Scott Halleran

A new thread on today's free-agent bonanza, still not involving the Pirates.

-P- The Mariners will sign Robinson Cano to a 10-year, $240 million deal with a no-trade clause, mostly proving that, after a mess of a Rangers franchise signed Alex Rodriguez away from the Mariners with a 10-year deal many years ago, the Mariners didn't have a good laugh or even really notice when the Rangers ended up dumping his salary. If you can't force a bad team into contention by signing Alex Rodriguez in 2001, you definitely can't do it by signing Robinson Cano in 2013.

-P- The Mets have agreed to terms with Curtis Granderson.

-P- The Yankees will re-sign Hiroki Kuroda. The Yankees could also turn to Shin-Soo Choo now that Cano is gone, which is typically Yankee-like. After getting Jacoby Ellsbury, they've already got a ton of outfielders, so Choo isn't even a great fit for them -- he's just the newest expensive thing.

-P- The Astros will sign Scott Feldman for three years, giving them another veteran to pair with newly-acquired Dexter Fowler.

-P- The Orioles will sign Ryan Webb to a two-year deal.

-P- The Rangers will sign J.P. Arencibia to be their backup catcher.

-P- And from last night, the Marlins agreed to sign Rafael Furcal to a one-year deal to be their second baseman. The Pirates had shown interest in Furcal earlier in the offseason, but they certainly didn't have a full-time starting spot to offer him. Furcal also lives in southern Florida.
