The Red Sox have re-signed Mike Napoli for two years and $32 million, taking the best remaining first baseman off the market. He wound up being relatively affordable, but there wasn't any real indication the Pirates were seriously interested in him. We heard, of course, that the Pirates viewed him as a "perfect fit," but even that report indicated the Pirates weren't going to get involved. It appears the Pirates were interested in Napoli the way you might admire a coat in the window at Barney's, even as you see no point in even entering the store to look at the price tag.
Oh well! In other news, the Yankees agreed to terms with Carlos Beltran even though they already had Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner, Alfonso Soriano and Ichiro Suzuki in the outfield (although I assume Soriano will now be a big part of the mix at DH). Like I said yesterday when there was a rumor they might pursue Shin-Soo Choo after Robinson Cano's departure, the Yankees are really just throwing money around randomly now.
