I saw a post on ESPN earlier this week saying the Padres should definitely trade Chase Headley before opening day and listed some possible destinations/scenarios. Of course the one that had me most interested was the one involving the Pirates. Jim Bowden posted the article but it is unfortunately for "Insiders"only so I will just post what he had as a possibility.
Bowden said a package that incuded Hanson and Polanco could be enough to swing a deal for the silver slugger. Earlier last year Headley also said that PNC was one of his favorite places to hit, as he showed by hitting for 3 HRs and 9 RBIs in only 13 at bats there last season. He would also provide the Pirates with a legitimate clean up hitter and force opposing to pitch to Cutch. The addition of Headley would also let Alvarez hit 5th instead of clean up where he struggled at.However, the gold glover would force Pedro to play first so the deal, if made, should be made ASAP in order to allow El Toro the chance to learn the new position.
I for one would love to see this line up:
- Marte LF
- Walker 2B
- Cutch CF
- Headley 3B
- Alvarez 1B
- Jones/Snider RF
- Martin C
- Barmes SS
The question is for what price? Polanco is disposable due to the immense depth we have in the outfield. Marte, McCutchen, Presley, Snider, Tabata, and Sands are all young and on the 40 man roster. Josh Bell and Barrett Barnes are also top tier outfield prospects right with Polanco. The key to this deal is Hanson.
I dont think the Pirates can afford to part with short stop, Hanson is really the only SS prospect we have and could be an electric player at PNC for years. Ever since Jack Wilson left there has been a hole up the middle and Hanson could finally fill it. My offer would be Polanco, Heredia, and Gaby Sanchez.
Let me know what you think
