How much optimism should a Pirates fan have?

I was raised in Pennsylvania and am a big fan of the Penguins, Steelers, and Penn State. The oddball in my teams is/was the Los Angeles Dodgers. In recent years I have started to pull more and more for the Pirates. Most people here in NC, that know me, just assume I am also a Pirates fan. Additionally, I have become disgusted with the throw money at the players and win at all costs mentality that has over taken baseball and that the Dodgers have embraced. I prefer to see organizations build from withing. I don't like how the Yankees and Dodgers just buy the best players. All this being said, my question is: HOW MUCH OPTIMISM SHOULD A PIRATES FAN HAVE?

We all know the history. The last 20 years of losing and the last two teases of Pirates' success. Especially last year. That was really hard to take. I was goading a friend who is a fan of the Brewers and that turned out to bite me in the butt.

I am far away from newspaper coverage of the Pirates and don't hear any conversations about them. I just saw that lead article on ESPN implies that this year might be the year.

Do you folks really think so? I would love to see them make the playoffs.

How much optimism should I have?
