....I think I may have officially (hopefully temporarily) lost hope.
I get it, it's early. And last year's start was comparably bad (tho this one feels, and apparently numbers-wise is, even worse). And Pedro is "streaky." And they cant go anywhere but up. And even a sh!tty manager like Hurdle really only costs a team a few games over the course of a season (forget the bunts and run game and the fundamentals - how the hell he could possibly rationalize starting Pedro v. Kershaw still blows my mind).
But as Quagmire tells Bryan in an epic rant, "I could forgive all of that, all of it, if you weren't such a BORE!"
They have been so painful to watch, that it literally makes you feel guilty that you wasted 3 hours of your life. And I've never felt that way in 30 years.
I'll still watch and read and hope, but something feels different. Apathy and boredom has created a feeling of hopelessness. Maybe that feeling will be crushed when Pedro goes on one of his tears, though I finally realize that Pedro is who he is, and that isnt necessarily a good thing. It's not a bad thing either. It's just a mediocre thing. And that sucks.
You know what sucks worse? The fact that I cant help but shake the feeling that Gerrit Cole will somehow end up being the Pitching-version of Pedro - jaw-droppingly good when he's on a roll, with maddening periods of inconsistency that never really allow him to rich his full potential. I have nothing to really base that on (though for as good as his stuff is, you sure hope that he shows some elongated stretches of dominance v. minor league hitters) - other than what can only be described as the dreaded PirateStink. One you put that uni on, there's apparently no getting it off. (Cutch is clearly an outlier).
