Keith Law mock draft has Pirates taking D.J. Peterson, Trey Ball

Mike Stobe

Keith Law's new mock draft (insider-only) has the Pirates taking New Mexico 1B/3B D.J. Peterson with the No. 9 overall pick, and Indiana high school LHP/OF Trey Ball at No. 14. Significantly, Law also has the Astros passing on Mark Appel, and taking Jonathan Gray instead.

Peterson will probably end up as a first baseman, but he has very good power and plate discipline. Law also mentions that the Pirates have also been linked to Austin Meadows and high school catcher Reese McGuire at No. 9. (Law has Meadows and fellow Georgia high school outfielder Clint Frazier falling to Nos. 12 and 13, which even he notes "seems odd." He thinks, though, that teams are gravitating toward players they perceive as more safe.)

Ball could be a top pick either as a pitcher or an outfielder. As a pitcher, he has the sort of tall, slender body type the Pirates seem to love, and he already throws in the low 90s. He's apparently a little more raw as a hitter, but he's athletic and has upside with the bat. ESPN's scouting report notes that, if the team that selects him makes him a hitter, he would likely project as a right fielder -- his arm, obviously, would be a big part of that. Mississippi State outfielder Hunter Renfroe or Fresno State outfielder / power bat Aaron Judge could also be a possibility, Law suggests.
