Brewer has strong outing, Jhang goes deep

Colten Brewer started his season off right and Jin De Jhang homered as Jamestown started 2-0. Eric Avila homered twice in a Bradenton loss.

Light action with West Virginia off and Indianapolis rained out.

-- Altoona beat New Hampshire in ten innings, 5-4. The Curve took a 3-1 lead into the top of the 9th, but Jason Townsend allowed a three-run HR. Townsend is having an awful season, but Altoona keeps using him in late inning roles. The Curve sent the game into extras in the bottom of the 9th when Alex Dickerson led off with a double and Andy Vasquez singled him in. Adalberto Santos then won it in the 10th with a one-out RBI single. Starter David Bromberg threw seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk, and fanning seven. Mel Rojas, Jr., went 2-5 and Charlie Cutler 2-3 with a triple. Santos gave the Curve the 3-1 lead with a two-run HR, his third. He went 2-5 on the day.

-- Bradenton got pounded by Jupiter, 11-5. Zack Dodson had a very rough start, allowing eight runs on six hits and a walk in two and two-thirds innings. Six of the runs were unearned due to an error by Alen Hanson, his fourth in his last three games. Zac Fuesser allowed another six hits and three runs in three and a third. Eric Avila, who's been relegated to a backup role, hit a pair of homers, his second and third. Hanson went 4-5 with two doubles.

-- Jamestown registered its second shutout to open the season, dropping Mahoning Valley, 3-0. The Jammers did it the hard way, allowing seven hits and four walks. Fortunately, the bad guys went 0-7 with RISP. Colten Brewer (pictured), who's been hampered by arm problems since the Pirates drafted him in 2011, gave up five hits and a walk, and fanned two, in five innings. Justin Topa, this year's 17th round pick, made his pro debut with a scoreless inning, allowing a hit and fanning one. Jovany Lopez, a small lefty who's spent four years in the Latin American summer leagues, managed two scoreless innings despite allowing one hit and walking three. Jin-De Jhang hit his first HR of the year. Jamestown had only three other hits, singles by Elvis Escobar, Danny Collins and Edwin Espinal. Escobar stole two bases. Harold Ramirez went 0-4 with two strikeouts.

-- The DSL Pirates2 lost to the Orioles2, 3-2. Michael de la Cruz went 1-3 with two walks. Richard Mitchell threw two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out two.

-- The DSL Pirates1 lost to the Rockies, 5-2. The Bucs had seven errors. Nothing much good happened.
