FanPost

Here we are

This is my first Fan Post so bear with me. I am truly #BUCN. Let's time travel for a bit to October of 1992. At 9 years old I had just watched the Pirates lose the NLCS for the third time in my young life. I was crushed. For god sakes how do you blow a 3-1 lead!? It didn't help that I liked Sid Bream when he was a Pirate. His slide into home winning game 7 was like a hot knife through my young heart. I remember being hysterical after the loss, crying on the floor of my bedroom. I'm talking the crying where you don't make much sound because it's so hard you're about to pass out. My Dad, who I know was just as upset as I was, didn't show it because I was so upset, and said "Don't worry buddy, they'll be back". I vividly remember saying, as any "irrational" 9 year old would say "no they won't" (I'm not so sure that if they blow this 19 over pace I won't be a 29 year old doing the same). Fast forward 20 years. My oldest son is six years old. He lives and dies with the Pirates, just like I did (and do). My Dad, now Papaw, and I took him to his first Pirates game last July. Due to us living in Indiana my Dad and I both have MLB extra innings so that we can watch every game. We text each other with comments constantly throughout games. In 2011 and 2012 the Pirates were finally fun to watch again, but I think deep down we all knew they were playing above their heads. That is why I never mentioned to my Dad what he said in 1992. I didn't really believe. After the sweep of the Angels and then the Mariners on a god forsaken west coast trip my Dad and I were doing our usual texting about the Pirates. I told my Dad "it's about time what you said in 1992 came true". He said, what did I say?. My response; "they'll be back". Dad's response was "better late then never son". I never brought that conversation in 1992 up until this year and that's because there was never any reason to. Even with the promise of 2011 and 2012, but this team is different. As of tonight and almost halfway through the season, OUR team is the best in baseball. Good god is it nice to be #BUCN
