Having read Bucs Dugout regularly, it seems we are almost unanimous that Brandon Inge should not be on the Buc's rosters. I have seen this proposition put forth regarding other players, too. "DFA the Fort, Snider, Barmes, and/or JMac!"
It should not be hard to cover Inge's contribution to the team offensively or defensively. Let's assume for argument's sake, we had a high likelihood to cover those players production, too. For instance, at catcher you bring up Sanchez and hope Solis covers AAA and add aggressive MiLB promotions to spread out the catcher prospects. For Snider, you have an acquisition or AP or Lambino. For Barmes (and Inge), you add D'Arnaud and/or DeJesus/Harrison. JMac has already been replaced.
I love The Fort, even though he has become a deep dark hole and I hear foreboding music when he is announced in the line-up. I was a big believer in the Snider trade and believe he still has potential. I was amazed at times with JMac's talents (including at the bat) and believe he also has potential. Barmes supporters have convinced me of his defensive value.
Inge (36) and Barmes (34) are rentals. The Fort (28) has an option and is a FA in 2017. Snider (25) is a FA a 2016. JMac (28) is a FA a 2015. All these guys have some value or potential. We can't just DFA them, have to pay them AND get nothing in return, even if we had the roster covered like we assumed.
People often make trade proposals, and they are met with "he doesn't have much/any value." But they do have SOME value, even if it is the proverbial "bag of balls." So, let's define "a bag of balls." Is Barmes worth a AA organizational player to anybody? Are Snider or JMac worth even a "lottery ticket?" If we could add to our team by subtracting any of the negative/marginal WAR players, with minimal waste of resources, what would you do?
