During the game last night on Root they were talking about how Byrd played winter ball this past off-season and that that is what prepared him for this better-than-usual season.
Of course, it does seem odd for a player to have his best season at age 35. And there's also the concern that the player might be tired by the end of the regular season. Byrd, reportedly, says he feels better than ever because he was in shape and ready to go at the start of spring training.
So, how do we feel about the effectiveness of winter ball at improving a player for the following season? Are there stats on this somewhere? I'd love to see a chart with players who've played winter ball and their WAR the following year.
