The Pirates were listless in a 4-0 loss to the Brewers Thursday night.
Andrew McCutchen set the tone for the game in the first. The Brewers were already up 1-0 thanks in part to an error by Gerrit Cole. In the Pirates' half of the inning, McCutchen hit a ball to the outfield that Carlos Gomez dove for and missed. Unfortunately, McCutchen hadn't been running hard, and he only ended up at third when he might have had an inside-the-park homer. After Pedro Alvarez grounded out, McCutchen was stranded.
Not to say there was anyone else not playing hard, but that's the kind of game this felt like. The Brewers scored another in the second and another in the fourth, and the Pirates couldn't get anything going against Yovani Gallardo, who pitched seven innings. Cole settled in after the first hour and ended up going 7.1 innings, but the Pirates never really rallied. One small positive: John Buck went 3-for-3 in his Pirates debut. Other than that, blah.
