Since news of Marte's extension hasn't been posted elsewhere just yet I thought I'd throw up a fan post so folks could discuss in the meantime. Terms are--from what I gather--6 years at $ 31 million with two additional club option years. Thus his arb years are bought out and as many as 3 free agent years if they exercise the options.
Interesting that this happened so quickly after news that Marte had rejected previous offers broke.
Hard to not like the deal from the Pirates perspective. Even if Marte's hitting never improves and he continues to put up numbers similar to 2013 he's a good bet to average 3 WAR a year minimum over the life of the contract.
There's the concern that Marte may continue to miss playing time due to injury. But it seems like the primary source of those injuries has been HBP. I imagine he'll be encouraged to avoid those a bit more going forward. We'll see if he does.
While there's some risk on the Pirates end it seems relatively minimal and these are the sort of risks I'd like to see them take. Ultimately I think this is essentially exactly how we hoped the Bucs would go about building the team for the long haul.
Now we can move on to discussing a Gregory Polanco extension ad naseum!
