Hello everyone, this is my first fanpost on Bucs Dugout, but with the advent of opening day, I figured now was as good a time as any to break the seal. The start of baseball season is in my book, the most exciting time of the year. I grew up with the sport, played it all through Junior College and for a whopping whole semester in Regular College so this is an annual ritual that is just the tops in my book. Anyway, I'm curious about a couple things from the rest of you Pirate fans:
One, what made you a Pirate fan? For me, I freely admit, I did not follow the team throughout our time "at sea". My dad is from Pittsburgh and would always take me to Pirate games back in the days of Jay Bell, Jeff King, Orlando Merced, Denny Neagle, Kevin Young, crap I could go on and on, but the fact was, they just didn't win so as a kid it was difficult for me to really put my heart into it. I live in Washington DC, and I also cheer for the Nats as I used to live in Navy Yard and would go to games by the barrel full back when 15 bucks got you in the gate and by the 4th inning you could move down to box level. Of course, with the recent resurgence of the Battlin' Buccos, I have found myself swept up in the hysteria and nostalgia of when I used to cheer like all hell for my all time baseball hero Andy Van Slyke. If that makes me a fair weather fan, meh, I'm cool with that. I was just curious how you all came to cheer for this team.
Two, if you could go back in time and sign any one ball player from history and make them a Pirate, who would it be? Netflix recently added Ken Burns Baseball (which, btw, I think they should rename Ken Burns New York Baseball) and of course, with opening day coming up, I have been devouring this like a fat kid at Golden Corral. I constantly found myself thinking "Oh man, if we had only offered just a little more, we coulda signed (insert player here)". Anyway, I won't give my answer here (mostly because I keep waffling) but who is yours? It can be for any reason too, not just because player X is the greatest of all time or whatever.
Anyway, I really wish I could be at PNC for opening day to cheer on Cutch for getting his MVP and for welcoming JIM LEYLAND (and barry...) back into the fold. I told my wife they were doing this and she thought it was a classy gesture. My dad, the old curmudgeon, hates the idea and wouldn't want Bonds within 1,000 miles of Cutch. I don't share QUITE the same level of resentment, but that's not the overall point of this post. I have plenty of faith in Pirate fans to statistically and morally debate Bonds from all different angles, it's part of what I really enjoy about Bucs Dugout. To all of you lucky sumbitches who can make it, please cheer extra hard for those of us who can't be there!
