As in the title, this is mainly for you guys/girls to vote on, but I would like to evaluate myself. The Pirates have many ways that they could go with their 24th overall pick in the draft. Their are many interesting talents coming out of this years' draft, as always, but this year it seems that there is more talent and potential in the pitching department. But, the Pirates have more needs at positions like 2B, 3B, and 1B (basically the infield). But they say that you pick for talent, not for need. Before I put the poll on, I would like to state who I think the Pirates should pursue with the 24th pick.
Luke Weaver (RHP, Florida State)
I think that Luke Weaver fits both bills (need and talent) and would be a perfect fit for the Bucs. But there is a strong chance that he is taken just a few picks before the Pirates. Of course, same was thought of Reese McGuire.... But anyway....
Weaver is a average height, lanky sized starter who can throw flames as high as 97, but really sits 91-94 MPH. Has an above average change up, which already gives him 2 plus pitches, and he would have 3 or 4 years to develop a third.
But, the one concern with Weaver is his breaking stuff. He has a slider/slurve pitch that scouts say will never become more than an average pitch. And his size could be an issue, but I don't see it to be one.
Alright, well that's my choice, but now it's the communities' choice. I will put in the poll some other potentials candidates. Unfortunately, I'm doing this from my phone, and it's WAAY too hard to use the actual poll thing, so just place your choice in the comments below!
Some top choices
Luke Weaver RHP
Kyle Freeland LHP
Michael Conforto OF
Michael Chavis 3B
