Gamethread and recap: Pirates lose Game 1, 5-1

Mitchell Layton

Here's the thread for Game 2 of tonight's doubleheader, just in case the first game didn't completely destroy your will to live.

Let's see -- 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position, a 20-minute rain delay (after which Charlie Morton predictably struggled), two errors (both involving Neil Walker), a Starling Marte TOOTBLAN, three hits for Steve Pearce. The first game had so much to not love. The Pirates headed into the rain delay with a 1-0 lead and did a nice job forcing Bud Norris to throw tons of pitches. But Morton allowed a single and a walk to start the fifth, and then Pedro Alvarez was charged with a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, with Walker failing to field a pretty bad throw to first. The Orioles followed with two singles, bringing home two runs.

In the sixth, Walker allowed Steve Clevenger to reach via an error, and then J.J. Hardy and Steve Pearce singled. Then in the seventh, Jeanmar Gomez gave up a homer to Nick Markakis.
