Pirates drop both games of doubleheader

Mitchell Layton

After losing the first game of Thursday's doubleheader 5-1, the Pirates lost the other 6-5, blowing a 4-0 lead and falling to 10-18 in the process.

The Pirates grabbed two in the first when Chris Tillman walked in two runs, then got another in the fifth when Andrew McCutchen doubled and Gaby Sanchez tripled off the right-field wall. They went up 4-0 in the sixth when Clint Barmes got hit by a pitch, then came home on Ike Davis' single.

They gave all that back in the bottom of the inning, with all of the damage coming with two outs. Nick Markakis singled, and then Brandon Cumpton got two groundouts. But then Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, Steve Pearce and J.J. Hardy had four straight hits, tying the game. Jones' hit bounced off Travis Snider's glove, and the entire rally would have been avoided if he'd caught it. It was a tough play, but it was a part of a bad night for Snider, who went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts and a walk. Hardy's two-run single tied the game, and the Pirates might have been able to avoid the last run had Chris Stewart been able to hang on to Starling Marte's throw home.

The Pirates went up 5-4 in the seventh on an RBI single by Marte, but Bryan Morris coughed up a solo homer to Nick Markakis in the bottom of the inning. It stayed 5-5 until extra innings, when Wieters hit a walk-off solo homer just inside the right-field foul pole on an extremely high fastball by Stolmy Pimentel in the tenth.
