If you turn the volume off during Pirates games and play the Smashing Pumpkins, Melancholy and Infinite Sadness, it syncs up perfectly.
Let's take the last Edinson Volquez start, for example. If you started the album when the opposing pitcher threw the first pitch, all the stars magically align.
As the Pirates came to the plate, a feeling of optimism enveloped you as 'Tonight, Tonight' played. Then, 'Zero' comes on and you realize it matches the total runs the Pirates scored that inning (and thus foreshadows how many runs they'll score in the next five innings.)
While Volquez warms up, 'Here Is No Why' plays and lyrics like, "A hidden diamond you cannot find" make all too much sense. Then, Mark Teixeira hits a 2 run homer as the chorus of 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings' kicks in and it's scary to think that this phenomenon is totally legitimate.
The next 60 minutes are basically filled melancholy and infinite sadness until '1979' comes on and you remember the last Pirates team to win a World Series. It's a nice moment. Shortly thereafter, you realize the rest of the game/album are filled with crap and you move on with your night.
Don't believe me? Give it a try during tomorrow night's Wandy Rodriguez start.
