Reds Sign Chad Moeller

The Reds have signed Chad Moeller to a one-year deal.

Moeller's BA/OBP/SLG the past three years:

  1. .208/.265/.303
  2. .206/.257/.367
  3. .184/.231/.276
Moeller does nothing. His average is just godawful, he doesn't hit for power, he doesn't draw walks, and he doesn't throw batters out. I'm pretty sure there's only one GM in baseball who'd value his set of non-skills enough to hand him a major league contract. Luckily for Moeller, his agent knew who that GM was.

Wayne Krivsky certainly isn't in Dave Littlefield territory yet, but can there be any doubt that he'll be there soon? Here's a brief rundown of the major moves Krivsky has made in the past six months:

-Traded a prospect for Esteban Yan.
-Traded a prospect for Juan Castro.
-Traded a prospect for Kyle Lohse.
-Traded a prospect for Rheal Cormier.
-Re-signed Scott Hatteberg to a one-year deal.
-Traded Austin Kearns, Felipe Lopez and Ryan Wagner for Gary Majewski, Bill Bray, Royce Clayton, Brendan Harris and Daryl Thompson.
-Traded a prospect for Eddie Guardado.
-Traded a PTBNL for Ryan Franklin.
-Traded a PTBNL for Todd Hollandsworth.
-Traded a PTBNL for Scott Schoeneweis.
-Re-signed Javier Valentin to a one-year deal.
-Signed Castro to a two-year contract extension.
-Dumped Jason LaRue.
-Signed Mike Stanton to a two year deal.
-Signed Bubba Crosby to a major league deal.
-Signed Alex Gonzalez to a three-year deal.
-Signed Moeller to a major league deal.

The Franklin, Hollandsworth and Schoeneweis deals were waiver deals - the trading deadline had passed - so Krivsky gets a bit of a pass on those. The LaRue, Valentin and Guardado moves made some sense. But after that? Geez, look at that list of names and tell me what kind of team Krivsky's trying to make. Imagine how freaking hard it's going to be for Jerry Narron to decide which pinch-hitter to use when he has to pick between Moeller, Crosby and Castro. And seriously, two years for Juan Castro? Two years for Mike Stanton? Why?!

Krivsky apparently is trying to succeed, but so far he's looking like Cam Bonifay, where you kind of admire the degree to which he really tries but mostly just wish he'd just stop, because his efforts are only making things hilariously bad.

Great Moves
These are all GREAT moves by Krivsky; he's got the Reds in a position to battle for a playoff spot.  Only problem is, they're playing for the NL Central of 1999...
