Bucs Trade Perez

Whoa. Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez for Xavier Nady.

If this is the whole deal, this is awful. Perez was probably a lost cause, but only probably. There's still some chance he could be ironed out. Nady is already 27 and has never been an especially good hitter. There isn't very much upside for the Bucs here - Nady is only a little bit better than the Ty Wigginton/Daryle Ward class of Pirates we always complain about, and the Bucs gave up quite a bit to get him.

Nady is basically Craig Wilson lite. He doesn't have a position, he's not a great runner, his hitting is not as good as Wilson's, and he's only two years younger than Wilson. Why you'd trade a 24-year-old pitcher (however damaged) with an All-Star caliber season under his belt, plus a valuable reliever, to a team that abruptly lost its setup man (Duaner Sanchez), to get Nady is beyond me. The Bucs already have Craig Wilson and they won't even play him.

This may mean the Bucs have given up on Ryan Shealy. With Chris Duffy knocking on the door at Class AAA, they may want to use Jose Bautista in right field and Nady at first base. Nady has several more years before he's eligible for free agency, so unless he's about to be traded, this would seem to solidify one of the corner positions for a while.

Wow.
Seriously...they didn't even throw in that shitty 100mph-throwing 26-year old AA reliever?  That's pathetic.

fire him
I swear littlefield has done some dumb shit in his tenure but this by far ranks up there with those 2 signings of Randa and Burnitz god!!! the worste damn trade ever!!!!!!!!!

This is awful.
I'm almost completely fed up with this pile of BS we call the GM, and that may be affecting my opinion and judgement on this one, but what in the hell is going on?  Hernandez and Perez? For... Nady?  He's a below average hitter in RF and at 1B and doesn't appear to have any signficant upside.  What the hell is going on.

This also probably means...
...that Littlefield has decided he doesn't need Shealy.

un-real
This deal goes beyond me.I mean fine if your going to be a seller in a buyers market, you better get something in return...something to help you in the future, this was like a fantasy baseball trade between 2 friends one of which is going to the playoffs and the other who isnt..fucken ridicolous!
~Fire Littlefield/Tracy and i'll be a little happier~

just talked to a friend of mine...big Mets fan...
...he's ALSO pissed off about the trade because he really likes Nady and with (former pirate) Sanchez doing so well, he doesn't see the need for another reliever.  So there we go.  I guess if both sides are pissed, that means it was a good trade, right?  Right?

Your friend
won't be pissed after Rick Peterson fixes what Spin Williams did to Perez

Craig Wilson without the walks
First thing I thought: Armando Rios; second thing: Jody Gerut.

Duaner Sanchez
Duaner Sanchez is NOT doing well. He's out for the season with a just-sustained shoulder injury, which means Littlefield had even more leverage ... which he SQUANDERED. It should have been the Mets sending two players to the Pirates for Hernandez, not the other way around! This sucks.

by bern1 on Jul 31, 2006 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, I just saw that...
...he should be a little more accepting of the trade after that.  But Littlefield once again did what Littlefield always manages to do...I'm no longer pissed about the Perez trade.  I'm too busy being suicidal about the Chacon trade (assuming it's true).

The DL in all of us
NOW who's overvaluing our junk? Are any of you the guys who two days ago were proclaiming relief pitchers are a dime a dozen, and suddenly Roberto Hernandez is Eckersley or something. And does it occur to anybody that NYC is just a wonderful place for a headcase like Ollie to look for his lost fastball? There's a lot more wrong with the guy than his head and his toe, I have to believe.

Not saying this is a good trade, understand. Just saying, what do you want for a dime-a-dozen reliever and a guy who's 1-3 with a high ERA in AAA and just got demolished in his last start?
