Around SBN: 2012 Africa Cup Of Nations Final

Open Thread: LCS, Day 10

It's Jake Westbrook and Dice-K in the deciding Game 7 tonight at 8:07 on FOX. Kevin Millar, the scruffy court jester of the 2004 Sox World Series team, will throw out the first pitch, which is amusing because Millar currently under contract with the Orioles, who are Red Sox division rivals, at least in theory.

-P- Lots of awesome news today. First, Paul Byrd has admitted to using HGH just after doing interviews for a book in which he talks about how his relationship with God and what that has to do with cheating in baseball. Byrd apparently only used the HGH before Major League Baseball banned it, and it does appear that his pituitary gland issue is legitimate, but he bought some of the HGH under dubious circumstances - with a prescription from a dentist whose license was later suspended.

-P- Larry Bowa will coach third base for the Mariners, thus making a badly-run organization that much more badly-run. Hey, if you're going to be badly-run, at least be consistent, right?

Bowa
He was not a manager but as far as teaching fielding mechanics there are few better than him. Many of todays players need to learn some of never give less than 100% attitude.

Good point
It's entirely possible that those that do not do well as managers still have qualities that make them good specialized coaches.

Bowa's problem as a manager
was annoying the bejesus out of his players and generally being really combative. Maybe he's learned, or maybe it's just possible to get away with acting like that in a professional veteran clubhouse like the Yankees'. It could be completely different in a different clubhouse, and given that he's already proven himself over and over to be a total jerk, I wouldn't want to take that chance and I don't see why any team would. What's the upside to hiring someone like Bowa? Because the downside is potentially pretty huge.

Spoiled millionaires
His combativeness was always refreshing to me in that he would not accept people not running out batted balls or mental mistakes. Never saw him berate a player for a physical failing just for being lazy or not caring to give 100%.

Big Papi
looked hilarious with swimming goggles in the dugout. Like Radioactive Man in the botched scene.

Pretty enjoyable series, especially if you never pulled for either team.

A-Rod's buddy
A-Rod and Larry Bowa are close friends, ever since Bowa was the third base coach for the M's with Lou Piniella as the manager. I often wondered if Bowa was brought aboard the Yankees to make A-Rod feel more comfortable. Bowa will bring around the M's middle infielders and possibly... dare I say it... help sway A-Rod to come back to the NW.

Byrd
I think I read somewhere today that Byrd says he mentions his HGH usage in the book and talks about the temptation to up his dosage to help him throw harder.

I can't say for sure, but it seems like only some of his prescriptions are suspect. I don't know why I'm defending the guy when it's pretty clear pro athletes don't deserve to be defended when it comes to this... but who lies about a pituitary tumor? Now THAT would be wrong.

Indians crap the bed
I was playing euchre in the loft with my uncle and a cousin from Solon on Saturday night when Drew hit his granny. I'd had a bad feeling about the Indians letting the series go back to Fenway. I said, "The series is over." No no, the cousin assured me. The Indians could come back. They have lots of offense. No no, I said. "The series is over."

Was it ever.

Not that I'm psychic ...
