The Season's Over

-P- With Mike Lowell winning the World Series MVP award and Josh Beckett finishing the postseason with a ridiculous 37 strikeouts, two walks and four earned runs in 30 innings, I bet there isn't a single person in Boston still wringing hands about the Hanley Ramirez trade.

-P- Joe Girardi is pretty likely to be the Yankees' next manager. I hadn't really thought of it the way Pat does, but he's probably right - this could become a bad situation that's made even worse by the fact that for the next couple years, the Yankees aren't likely to be the powerhouse they once were, what with Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and now A-Rod all potentially leaving. Accepting the Yankees job now means setting yourself up for all kinds of criticism, and it'll only look worse if there are tensions between the manager and the management anyway.

By the way, the Rangers have to be doing backflips right now - they're completely out from under the money they owed A-Rod, three years ahead of schedule.

great...
now I get to listen to ESPN speculate where A-Rod is going for the next however long, when they could be covering other sports items.  Maybe they should consider giving him his own network?

Tigers fill SS spot w/ Edgar Renteria
OK, we can officially check the Tigers off the list of potential destinations for Jack Wilson. Jurrjens was being floated in July as one of the possible prospects to come back to the Bucs in any deal, IIFC.

Tigers deal two prospects to Braves for Renteria

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers addressed one of their biggest needs Monday, acquiring shortstop Edgar Renteria from the Atlanta Braves for two prospects.

Renteria batted .332 in 124 games with the Braves this year, finishing with 12 homers and 57 RBIs. Detroit went into the offseason needing to add a shortstop after deciding to shift Carlos Guillen to first base.

The Tigers gave up right-hander Jair Jurrjens, who showed signs of promise last season, and minor league outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.

"We are excited to add an All-Star-caliber shortstop in Edgar Renteria to the Tigers organization," Detroit president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. "Edgar is a quality player, proven winner and tremendous leader that solidifies our infield."

It was the first major trade for new Braves GM Frank Wren, who took over when John Schuerholz stepped aside this month to become team president.

Renteria, a five-time All-Star, has a .291 career batting average over 12 seasons. The deal reunites him with Detroit manager Jim Leyland, who was in charge when Renteria and the Marlins won the World Series in 1997.

"Edgar is a premier major league player that is a great fit for our club," Leyland said. "I have a great history with him and I'm looking forward to being reunited with him."

Jurrjens started seven games for the Tigers this year, going 3-1 with a 4.70 ERA. Hernandez batted .293 with four homers and 50 RBIs for Single-A West Michigan this season.

Thanks for the update.
Just out of curiosity, you aren't the "real" Rich Aude, are you?

Stranger things have happened...

Thanks for the update.
Vlad: no, I'm just a fan who developed an irrational fixation with Rich Aude in the early 90s. I interviewed him in Memphis when he came through with the Carolina Mudcats and then at Three Rivers before a September game right after he was called up (I was a writer for the Pitt News at the time). The fact that he was involved in the multi-error play on Opening Day 1995 (immediately following the strike) that led to fans showering the TRS field with promotional plastic flags kind of cemented his status in my heart.

I certainly hear you there.
Everybody has their obscure favorites. I formed an irrational attachment to Greg Hansell back in the day...
