Open Thread: Playoffs, Day Two

-P- The Rockies are piling it on against Kyle Kendrick and the Phillies right now. Colorado starter Franklin Morales didn't pitch so well either (and, by the way, what's up with two rookies starting game two of a playoff series?), so Josh Fogg is pitching now on three days' rest. Colorado leads, 10-3.

-P- Chien-Ming Wang and C.C. Sabathia begin the Yanks-Indians series at 6:37 PM.

-P- Ted Lilly starts in Arizona against Doug Davis at 10:07 PM.

And Josh Fogg gets a playoff win.
There's something he wouldn't have gotten to do in Pittsburgh.

Rookie pitchers in game 2?
That's what happens when half of the rotation gets injured: Aaron Cook and Jason Hirsch for the Rox; Freddy Garcia, Jon Lieber and Ryan Madson for the Phils.

Plus, it likely doesn't help that the Phils' second best starter is in the bullpen.

Yeah
It's funny, though - Hirsh is a rookie himself.

No respect
for the integrity of the playoffs there, obviously.

I watched my first few innings...
of 2007 playoffs baseball today. (I don't have cable, so I only watch games on MLB.tv or in the nosebleeds in San Diego.) Man, what a culture shock compared to watching a Pirates game. The crowd in Cleveland was screaming the entire game. It was like watching a soccer game.

This isn't a revelation to anyone else, I'm sure... perhaps what's most striking about it is that I would notice that much of a difference compared to... well, pretty much any Pirate game ever.

Go there sometime
I was in Jacobs Filed (vs. NYY) and Fenway (vs. LAA) on consecutive weekends this summer.  Let me tell you, it's damn difficult to come back and watch the crowd get amped up for Pirates Jukebox, and the Pierogi race, and Plinko, and all that crap.  Boston came back from a 5-0 deficit in the game I saw, capped off by a Big Papi grand slam.  I can't even begin to describe the atmosphere in the stadium right then.

My favorite Pirate series
of the entire season was the visit to Yankee Stadium. We were already out of it, as usual, and the Yankees were struggling, but the atomsphere was playoff-esque. The crowd hung on every pitch and reacted to everything that happened. Even I felt so much more involved.

And then, of course, we laid an egg, but that's neither here nor there.

The Jake
My brother was at the Jake last night. I talked to him right before the first pitch, he said the atmosphere was absolutely electric there and they hadn't even thrown a pitch yet. I haven't talked to him since the game ended, but while watching the game on TBS last night there were points that I couldn't even hear the announcers because the crowd was cheering over them. That never happens in a baseball game.

It won't change everything, but great news nonetheless.
