News Roundup: Pirates Name Don Long Hitting Coach

My apologies for the sporadic updates. I'm in the middle of five cross-country flights in three weeks. That may be mundane for some of you in the business world, but I'm not used to it, and now I'm sitting in a library in Palo Alto with a throbbing headache after being stranded at the San Jose airport at 2:00 AM. But enough about me.

-P- The big news is that the Pirates hired a new hitting coach, Don Long. Since 1999, Long had been the minor-league hitting coordinator for the Phillies, where he'd worked with John Russell. This strikes me as an odd pick - since 1999, the only hitters Philadelphia has drafted who've done anything in the majors have been Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. While those guys are certainly nothing to sneeze at - and while Howard's success, given the questions people had about him while he was in the minors, was a major coup - that's really all there is, in eight years of drafts, unless Adrian Cardenas makes good. Of course, it's possible that none of that was Long's fault, and the Phillies haven't drafted a lot of high profile hitters in that time.

-P- Dave Parker is on the Hall of Fame ballot, but can I get some love for Bert Blyleven and newcomer Tim Raines? Raines was an exceptional basestealer, but his best skill was actually his plate discipline, and I wonder if that might cause some voters to leave him off the ballot.

-P- The Cubs re-signed Kerry Wood to a one-year, $4.2 million contract.

Other guys Long worked with
Jimmy Rollins (his last two years in minors)
Jason Michaels
Carlos Ruiz (current catcher--he's not bad)
Marlon Byrd
The two guys they just traded, Bourn and Costanza.

Not an overwhelming list, but it has three huge hitters on it and the Phillies haven't emphasized their farm system that strongly.  They haven't been drafting early in the first round and don't stockpile picks like some affluent teams.

Tim Raines
had the great speed, and very good on-base discipline for 7-8 years, but I dunno ... his 162-game averages don't knock me over. I don't remember him being particularly well-regarded as a defender, and I don't see any Gold Gloves listed, kind of odd for someone so fast. He'd be a slam-dunk for the Hall of Very Good ...

No one else on the writers' list jumps out at me as being especially worthy, so maybe this is the year Blyleven gets over the hump, unless there's just no more convincing 25.1% of the voters about his case. I go both ways on him myself.

Oh, wait
Somehow I missed McGwire. But I DID say "worthy."

Raines
On a coarse level, he's pretty similar to Tony Gwynn. Less BA, but more walks and better defense and baserunning. He's also similar to (but significantly better than) Lou Brock.

For me, he's pretty much a slam dunk.

Blyleven and Al Oliver both should be
in the Hall of Fame.  I can't understand why they aren't already there. Blyleven still has a chance, but I doubt Oliver ever will get another shot, and it is a shame.

Al Oliver
needed to have a few more age 35 seasons earlier in his career ... He's another member of the Hall of Very Good.

Seeing what he broke loose with at 33 in Texas and 35 in Montreal makes me wonder about the effect Three Rivers had on his career. Well, I guess I can go look at the home-road splits.

Bert belongs, for sure.
I think Oliver is just a little shy. YMMV, though.

Another ex-Buc in trouble.
Dan Serafini tested positive for non-performance-enhancing drugs, picking up a 50-game suspension. Link.

Huh.
Now the news reports are saying that it was a performance-enhancing substance. I stand corrected.

Delmon Young
Unrelated ... Just saw a report that the Twins will acquire OF Delmon Young from the Rays for Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett and Juan Rincon.

http://www.startribune.com/blogs/neal/?p=276

I'm a bit surprised -- Young was considered one of the top 5 prospects in baseball not long ago. Garza may be good, but I'm not sure he's #1 or #2 material. This could have lots of implications on Johan Santana, among other things. Very interesting stuff.

Twins also get Harris and Pridie.
It's an interesting trade all around.

Dang ...
I was hoping the BUcs could somehow swing a deal for Garza.  Too late.

As for Don Long, wouldn't he also have worked with Shane Vittorino?

Garza
Garza would have fit nicely in the Pirates rotation, but given the price, it's probably good that we didn't make a deal. Actually, since it took Delmon Young to pry Garza, I'm not sure the Pirates could have competed without surrendering Andrew McCutchen.

On the flip side, it would have been nice to acquire Delmon Young. He's 22, and while he doesn't draw enough walks, his other abilities are off the charts. (This makes me think that the Rays are confident that Rocco Baldelli or Elijah Dukes will step up in the outfield next year.)

I hope Huntington is hearing these rumors and talking to both the Rays and Twins to see if he can get involved.
