Pittsburgh vs. Los Angeles Dodgers, 20 April 2007

10:40 PM, FSNP, WPGB

Tony Armas (0-1, 13.50) vs. Randy Wolf (2-1, 4.00).

Armas makes only his second start of the year, and he may not get it in; it's raining in Southern California right now, and there's a good chance of rain later tonight. If the game does happen, it's as late a game as they ever schedule, and it'll be extremely late for east coasters. The one benefit of this is that the twenty-somethings among you will be able to watch the end of the game live even after a long night of drinking. If you end up doing this, please post your thoughts in the comments.

This has got me thinking - wouldn't it be a cool idea for some cities to have very late games, at, say, 9:30 PM, on five or so Fridays or Saturdays per year? Dodger Stadium is in a fairly remote location, so it wouldn't work there, but in someplace like San Diego, where the ballpark is right in the middle of a huge party district, it would be ideal. They'd do very well at the concession stands.

Anyway, if the last few starts are any indication, Wolf seems to be fully recovered from his 2005 Tommy John surgery. He's never been a flamethrower, but reports this spring said his fastball was as hard as 94 MPH. He has a good curve and change and also throws a cut fastball and a slider.

Here's the box. The Pirates are going with their "Outfield defense? Whatever" configuration, starting Xavier Nady in center and Brad Eldred in right. This is odd given Dodger Stadium's roomy outfield, and especially odd given that you'd think L.A.'s outfield dimensions would be something Jim Tracy would know about.

It's still fairly early here; I may go out before the end of the game, but I'll be around to post some comments. Again, feel free to join in!

Strikeouts looking. Both Sanchez and Bay so far.

Wolf's curveball
It's good. I'd forgotten how much that thing breaks.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 10:47 PM EDT reply actions

strikeout city
ugh.  watch out jack! we're gonna need those knees!

yeah jacko!!

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

LaRoche
Walks after hitting a foul that was nearly a homer.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

Eldred
Big swing and a K. I'm still pretty happy with that first inning, though.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

a good
2 out rally. another run or two woulda been nice though.  with Armas on the hill i feel a one run lead may not stand....

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

you warned us
about this guy. and you were right.

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

our "pitcher"
but i can tell why you asked. what was that? do we really need to see another ball drop between players?

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Juan Pierre
is really fast, but I think the Pirates should at least make an effort to keep runners honest. They've been stolen on a whole lot this year (13 SB against only 5 CS).

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

Garciaparra
Knocks in Furcal and Pierre. 2-1, Dodgers.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:05 PM EDT reply actions

Finally
The first inning took 28 minutes.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:08 PM EDT reply actions

question..
do you know how ahead of the curve we are in strikeouts this year? do we just have WAY more than the rest of the bigs or am i being negative?

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

We're
8th in the majors in offensive K's. I'm back... phone call.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

i guess
that's not the same as being THE WORST...just seems like it.  you only missed us leaving another guy on base.

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

I'm not sure how it relates
to the number of plate appearances we've had. It may be far more than our fair share because of our low on-base percentage. But it's still not as severe as I would've assumed - the Bucs had 111 going into this game, and the average was around 100.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

PIerre aboard again
LaRoche muffs Pierre's grounder. Tough play, but makeable. Watch out for another steal.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

Umpires being really sensitive
about pitchers touching their mouths. Both Wolf and Armas have been busted for it so far. I wonder if that controversy about Francisco Rodriguez doctoring the ball had something to do with it?

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

And there it is
Pierre steals. Not really a great throw by Paulino.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:40 PM EDT reply actions

seems about time for this ...
Tracy: You guys. You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out of the dugout. You know what that makes you? T-Bone!
Shelby: Lollygaggers!
Tracy: Lollygaggers. What's our record, boy?
Shelby: Six and eight.
Tracy: 6-8! How did we get there?
Shelby: It's a miracle.
Tracy: It's a miracle!

Hahaha
The numbers are even almost correct! Give it a few days.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Gonzalez singles
RBI knock. Still two men on and only one out. Unless Armas can cut down the next hitter, he's going to have a short night.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:45 PM EDT reply actions

good one
"cut" down?

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

How do you Tracy felt
Sending his men onto THIS field tonight with Armas pitching? I mean, he's gotta know...

This guy is imploding.

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

Man
They're just killing us with singles. Is anyone up in the pen?

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

Wasdin, I think
So, we'll see about that.

by Murphy on Apr 20, 2007 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

my god
what a night buddy! his era went from 13 to 30 in two innings.

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 11:51 PM EDT reply actions

8-1
8-1. With a man on. Tracy's trotting out.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:51 PM EDT reply actions

uh
HE is the best we got? Our 5th best pitcher? No one can do better than this?

Oh great! Wasdin!

Why not? Might as well get him some innings..

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

Wayback
Now this is the right time to use Wasdin.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 20, 2007 11:54 PM EDT reply actions

Well, at least
Jeff Kent looks like he's having a blast.

by Murphy on Apr 20, 2007 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

so
what do you do now? Just give up and use Wasdin NOW so he can's possibly pitch again in the series?

or do we actually "put our best foot forward" and use up EVERYONE NOW and have nothing for the weekend? Seriously..

by Johnny Strange on Apr 20, 2007 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

If Wasdin is unavailable...
I'm pretty sure that's a good thing. Let him chew up innings now for as long as possible.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed
i'm just wondering about the mgr's state of mind.

by Johnny Strange on Apr 21, 2007 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Man
That curveball of Wolf's is filthy. And slooooww. He's got seven Ks.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

will
pierre get 3?

by Johnny Strange on Apr 21, 2007 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

Vin Scully has a good point
Why is it considered bad form for a runner to steal a base when his team is winning by a touchdown, and yet it's ok for the hitter to try to get on base?

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:08 AM EDT reply actions

kent
wants his rbi's!! prick.

by Johnny Strange on Apr 21, 2007 12:11 AM EDT reply actions

Sanchez
hits a leadoff single. Let's get it going! Maybe Sanchez can also drive in the tying run this inning.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:14 AM EDT reply actions

Wayback!
Andre Ethier hits one out not five seconds after Scully gets done talking about how Wasdin is a flyball pitcher.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:21 AM EDT reply actions

is this gonna
get really REALLY ugly? Wasn't 7 a big enough lead?

by Johnny Strange on Apr 21, 2007 12:22 AM EDT reply actions

Wow!
Great play by Eldred to rob Betemit of a homer! How about that!

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

I predict...
this performance is going to result in Wasdin being sent down.

It's 12:30 EST. Where are the stragglers?

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:24 AM EDT reply actions

Let's focus on managable goals...
like not allowing Randy Wolf to hit any more doubles.

by Murphy on Apr 21, 2007 12:25 AM EDT reply actions

but
shouldn't it result in more...?

what does it say to the hitters when they know it'll be an uphill battle more often than not.

I know our offense hasn't set the world on fire, but if that sleeping giant ever DID wake up, they'd be in a shootout already...

by Johnny Strange on Apr 21, 2007 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

Wasdin
has allowed four hits in 2.1 innings, including a double and a homer, and had a hitter robbed of a homer by an outfielder. For all that, he's very lucky to have only allowed one run.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:31 AM EDT reply actions

Wolf
Strikes out LaRoche (swinging) and Eldred (looking). That's nine.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

Ridiculous
Another whiff. Really good curveball. Wolf's over 100 pitches and Chad Billingsley is warming up, so he's probably done. I'm kind of psyched to see Billingsley. I think he started once against the Bucs last year, but I don't remember seeing it.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:34 AM EDT reply actions

are we
Averaging 10 strikeouts the last 3 games?

of course, if it were a 2-1 game we still wouldn't be cutting into it...

by Johnny Strange on Apr 21, 2007 12:35 AM EDT reply actions

Actually
Eleven and a third K's averaged in the last three games.

by Murphy on Apr 21, 2007 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

and
most consider this a BAD thing, right?

something that makes winning more difficult?

more difficult than say, putting the ball in play?

by Johnny Strange on Apr 21, 2007 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

There's a chance
that it could.  Yes.

by Murphy on Apr 21, 2007 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Well
My problem is not the Ks themselves, but the fact that they keep looking clueless all the time. I believe there's a slight inverse correlation between offensive Ks and run scoring. I mean, Jim Thome and Ryan Howard K all the time. But that's a different thing. When a team Ks all the time, never walks, and never scores, it's probably because they just don't know what they're doing up there. Especially when they're K'ing less because they're taking huge swings and more because they're taking good pitches and swinging at horrible ones.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions

What's weird about it
Is that K's are always good from the defense's standpoint and correlate strongly with success, but are largely irrelevant from the offense's view. I've never been able to wrap my head around that one.

by matskralc on Apr 21, 2007 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Man
You don't want to walk Rafael Furcal.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:37 AM EDT reply actions

Olmedo Saenz
Before he just walked, he had a career .468/.528/.894 line against the Bucs.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:43 AM EDT reply actions

yikes
that was nifty.

by Johnny Strange on Apr 21, 2007 12:46 AM EDT reply actions

All kinds of changes
Billingsley at pitcher, Ramon Martinez at second, Olmedo Saenz at first, Brady Clark in right, Wilson Valdez in somewhere.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:55 AM EDT reply actions

Don Kelly
pinch-hits for Wasdin. Final line: 3.1 IP, 2 R, 5 H, one homer, and one homer narrowly saved by the rightfielder. Not to pile on, but seriously, there are several relievers in Indianapolis who deserve more of a shot than Wasdin does. He shouldn't have a long leash.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:57 AM EDT reply actions

I bet
Don Kelly deserves more of a shot in the bullpen than Wayback does.

by matskralc on Apr 21, 2007 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

you know
I was coming to complain that Baustista is still batting 8th while Black Hole continues to "hit" in the #2 hole, but it's sort of a deck-chairs-on-the-Titanic sort of issue by now. How long til the Penguins season starts?

by matskralc on Apr 21, 2007 12:58 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah
I agree with you re: Bautista, but it's probably a tough sell right now - Wilson's OPS is higher. That'll change, but I'll wait until it does to make the argument that Wilson should be eighth.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

didn't Black Hole do this last year?
Start out actually being a decent hitter, then turn back into a (really rotten) pumpkin?

by matskralc on Apr 21, 2007 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Wow
What a catch by Brady Clark!

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 12:58 AM EDT reply actions

Marte
Or "Martee," as Scully calls him, in to pitch. Regrettably, B.P. Chacon's probably unavailable because he pitched two frames yesterday.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 1:02 AM EDT reply actions

Bay singles
Runners on first and third. Maybe we can make this one respectable.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 1:10 AM EDT reply actions

Billingsley
has a good breaking pitch, but still... that's three Ks for LaRoche. At this point, I'd be into him playing all eight defensive positions the rest of the game, just so he can get some extra BP in a meaningless situation.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 1:13 AM EDT reply actions

Bayliss
Now on the hill. Can we really not use Chacon? I don't want to see B.P. pitching tomorrow when the game is close.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 1:15 AM EDT reply actions

Brad Eldred
Is now at first. I assume Nate McLouth is in right.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 1:19 AM EDT reply actions

Rudy Seanez
on to pitch the ninth for the Dodgers.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 1:22 AM EDT reply actions

Paulino caught looking
Man, how many straight, vanilla Seanez fastballs are the Bucs going to look at? Anyway, that's 12 Ks for the Dodgers tonight.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Apr 21, 2007 1:26 AM EDT reply actions

Jose Bautista doubles
Well, that's nice. Irrelevant, but nice. He's got an eight-game hitting streak going.
