Link Roundup: 4/23/07

-P- John Grabow has returned from the DL. Juan Perez heads back to Indianapolis. The Pirates apparently sent Perez rather than John Wasdin because they needed someone who could pitch multiple innings. Given the way some of the Pirates' starters have pitched so far, that's reasonable. But if that's what you need, why not just send both Perez and Wasdin down and add Marty McLeary instead? There's nothing in Wasdin's track record the past couple years to suggest he's a much better pitcher than McLeary, and McLeary hasn't stunk it up at any level since joining the Pirates organization. It might not work, but given the way Wasdin has pitched, why not?

-P- Bryan Bullington has a pretty ERA. Ignore it. He has eight walks and just nine strikeouts in 17.2 innings.

-P- The Pirates had a closed-door meeting yesterday, and then Tom Gorzelanny, Chris Duffy and the rest of the Bucs beat the Dodgers, 7-5.

-P- Barry Bonds hit his 740th career jack against the Diamondbacks yesterday.

-P- Tampa's James Shields struck out twelve Indians yesterday.

-P- New Yankee Chase Wright gave up four straight home runs to Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek as the Red Sox finished sweeping New York. Welcome to the big leagues, Chase.

How many mop-up pitchers do you need?
Isn't that what BP's around for? Although I suppose the Pirates are one of the few teams with a genuine need for multiple garbage-inning pitchers.

The problem is Tracy
He won't use the better relievers (Capps, Bayliss, Marte if there are no inherited runners to allow to score) more than an inning at a time.  They pitch so many games that there always have to be a couple mop-up guys available to pitch 2-3 innings.
