News Roundup: Around the Majors

-P- The All-Star teams have been announced, and Freddy Sanchez will be the Pirates' representative. I don't worry much about All-Star selections, but this is a Mike Williams pick. This year, Sanchez has hit .305, but he's shown no power and played poor defense at second. It's a shame, because as with the bizarre 2003 Williams selection, it isn't like the 2007 Pirates don't have players who have been good - where are Ian Snell, Tom Gorzelanny and Matt Capps?

-P- The big news today - and you've probably already heard about this - is that Mike Hargrove has resigned as manager of the Mariners. The M's have been playing surprisingly excellent baseball, especially recently, so there may be some unstated reason why Hargrove is resigning. I hope he and his family are okay.

-P- One Cincinnati paper speculates that Reds manager Jerry Narron could be the next manager to go, and soon... perhaps tomorrow. (Thanks to Red Reporter.)

-P- The Brewers dealt unhappy reliever Jose Capellan to the Tigers for Class A pitcher Chris Cody. Cody has been terrifying Midwest League hitters, but he's 23, so he really should be. He doesn't throw hard, so his success so far may just be the result of a more polished player beating up on rawer competition. In any case, Capellan had been mediocre on the field and a nuisance off it in 2007, so it may be worth the Brewers' while to take a shot on Cody.

So how the hell does Bonds make the starting line-up? And don't get me started on diva extraordinare Prince Fielder starting at 1st.

diva or not...
... i think it's safe to say that fielder has earned it.  who in the NL is more deserving of the start?

Applying to Prince and Barry
I just have the old-fashioned view that the All-Star game should be contested between guys who put a relatively good face on baseball. Prince Fielder, who we've seen cross home plate and do a touchdown dance, is not a good representative for the game.
