Pittsburgh vs. Atlanta, 13 July 2007

7:35, FSNP, WPGB

Ian Snell (7-5, 2.93) vs. Tim Hudson (8-5, 3.54). Here's the box. I'll be in the comments for at least the first hour.

Today's notes:

-P- Only in Pittsburgh does Xavier Nady look like a "star." He contributes little on defense and only has an .848 OPS, and almost all the difference between Nady's hitting this year and his hitting the previous three years comes from a 41-point difference in his batting average against righties. Batting average fluctuates a lot from year to year, so there's little reason to believe this means much, especially since Nady has only had about 200 at bats against righties this year. Until I see a lot more evidence, I'm going to go ahead and say that Nady is a role player who's bumping his head on his ceiling. He's not a star, and there is still plenty of cause to be furious with the fact that we had to pay Oliver Perez and, in effect, a supplemental first round pick and a second round pick (which the Mets got for Roberto Hernandez) to get him.

-P- GM Brian Sabean has received a two-year extension from the Giants. Contracts for GMs who don't deserve them are old hat for Pirates fans, but it's weird when other teams give them out. For years, Sabean has been coasting, relying very heavily on Barry Bonds, and sometimes fielding lineups that featured no above-average players other than Bonds and Ray Durham. He has neglected the Giants' farm system by deliberately throwing away first-round draft picks. His team is in last place and is currently in the middle of its third consecutive losing season despite an extremely old roster and a decent-sized payroll. The $126 million contract Sabean gave Barry Zito in the offseason may well turn out to be historically bad. The Giants have been in obvious need of an influx of young talent for years, but they've seemed to get older with every transaction. Everyone in their current lineup is at least 32, and they only have two good young players on their roster, Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum (who Sabean does deserve credit for drafting).

On top of all that, I was expecting to go through Sabean's recent trading record and find that he had at least done well there. Not so. Jesse Foppert and Yorvit Torrealba for Randy Winn was a good one, but that's easily the best trade he's had in years. In the meantime, he traded Francisco Liriano, Boof Bonser and Joe Nathan for A.J. Pierzynski, which was a complete debacle. He dealt current 23-year-old Brewers relief stud Carlos Villanueva for Wayne Franklin and Leo Estrella. He dealt Russ Ortiz for Damian Moss and Merkin Valdez - that deal didn't look bad at the time, but neither Moss nor top prospect Valdez worked out, and Ortiz won 21 games for Atlanta the next year. He traded Livan Hernandez to Montreal for Jim Brower, and then Hernandez had three consecutive years with ERAs under 4.00 for the Expos and Nationals. Most of the rest of the trades he's made since 2002 have been washes.

I just can't see how the Giants can think, based on the last five years, that Sabean should be running their team.

-P- Following up on some things I wrote about in the last couple days, Ichiro's contract is worth $90 million over five years, and Rickey Henderson will be the Mets' first base coach, not their hitting coach as was previously reported.

-P- Mark Cuban has applied to buy the Cubs.

Correct Lineup - Finally!
Tracy's finally got it right.  Sanchez batting 2nd not 3rd.  Our best player at clean-up.  Power hitters 3-5.  What took him so long?  Just wish Doumit was in there.  He must still be hurting....

Oliver Perez for Nady
I disagree with the assessment of the Perez/Nady trade.  Perez stunk for 2 years before the Pirates traded him.  And Nady been good this year.  An .848 OPS isn't so bad.  That's 8th among MLB RFers.

Nady
Anyone think that DL should be looking to deal Nady before the deadline?  His value may never be higher than it is right now, and there's not many sellers around the league.  I'm sure it's the last thing on Littlefield's mind, though.

For what?
Can we move back to the part where we view him as a useful part of the team, even though he's got a horrible .848 OPS?  We shouldn't be looking to trade him at all, let alone for the dinner scraps available at the deadline.  Accepting for the sake of argument that we should trade him, all it does is shuffle one "mediocrity" out the door for another one, or to make room for another one.

It would just be nice for change
To see Littlebrain unload somebody at the peak of his value instead of waiting until he hits utter rock-bottom.

I hear you...
...and I gues I didn't mean to imply he was untouchable.  But he is bringing something to the team right now that cannot be replaced from within the organization.  And the theory that sellers get screwed at the deadline, whether their initials are DL or not, is heading towards the realm of objective fact.

Anyway, there's a million things wrong with the team right now.  Nady isn't one of them, and the mere fact that Dave Littlefiled traded for him doesn't mean this performance is a mirage.  This upsurge is only 200 AB?  Coming into the season, he had just over 900 PA against right-handers.  He certainly established a pattern, but not in stone, I wouldn't think.

come on
a decent pitching prospect for nady would be a good deal.  Doumit is easily a better option for right fielder of the future.

I wouldn't necessarily shop him aggreessively...
...but I'd be willing to listen to offers, and I'd take one if it were good enough.

McLouth
starts with a single. The Braves have no lefties in their bullpen tonight, the Braves' announcers report.

... Ugh, DP by Sanchez.

Awesome
I have to laugh at that error by LaRoche, even though it cost the Pirates a batter.

by Charlie on Jul 13, 2007 7:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh no
I guess that error isn't so funny anymore.

by Charlie on Jul 13, 2007 7:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No...
The error was still humorous.  Only if we were in some type of pennant race would it be less funny.

I'm back&I even watched the entire Bucs' 9-0 L
While it's true Nady's numbers aren't that much better than they were with the Mets before his trade to Pittsburgh, it's not like he has Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes interspersed in the same lineup. He's putting up good clutch numbers without any help around him, he's played noticeably hurt and he's shown heart -- more than most Pirates players show or their opponents. There are plenty of easier targets than Nady. Let's go Bucs! We need Adam Lind, OF, Toronto (currently Triple-A Syracuse) -- tell it to your friends.

Where would we play him?
He's a LF/1B/DH type, and I don't think I'd take him over Bay or LaRoche right now.

by Vlad on Jul 14, 2007 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lind
I agree, I wouldn't necessarily take Lind over Bay or LaRoche right now. But that's part of the Pirates' problem -- being more reactionary than proactive. Left field at PNC Park is more like a second center field, as you probably know. I would play Lind in right field, where you, Vlad, parked a homer in the 2006 All-Star game. BTW, I'm in the camp that no one should be an untouchable on the Pirates.

by JimBibbySweat on Jul 14, 2007 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

amen
to that. if toronto wont give lind a chance, we'll give it to him (and that team can see if nady's numbers might possibly spike when surrounded by a decent lineup)

by Geeves28 on Jul 13, 2007 11:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Isn't the fact
his numbers have already spiked evidence that there's not a lot of credibility to that "surrounded by a decent lineup" stuff? Jason Bay has put up some pretty good numbers in his career while surrounded by crap.

by bucdaddy on Jul 14, 2007 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree Bay has done well w/o a supporting cast
but you're response moves away from the initial blog entry stating that "batting average fluctuates from year to year", Nady "only" has an OPS of .848, and he only has a 41 point difference in batting average against right-handers. Isn't this discounting a lot? What other metrics for this season are more important, his RISP? Nady's doing fine there, also. I am not a big Nady fan but I can respect what he has done as a starter without reservation. Should the team look to trade him? As a stated before, I don't think the Pirates can afford not to consider trading anyone with due diligence.
