Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia, 27 July 2007

7:05 PM, FSNP, WPGB

John Van Benschoten (0-4, 8.17) vs. Jamie Moyer (8-8, 5.01). Well, this should be fun. We'll see if Van Benschoten has figured anything out since his last two terrible starts. I'm sure Ryan Howard, who has seven homers in his last nine games, is licking his chops. Here's the box; I'll be in the comments for the first part of the game.

Notes:

-P- Yet another paper reports that the Pirates have shown interest in Wily Mo Pena.

-P- The Rangers have traded Kenny Lofton to the Indians for High-A catcher Max Ramirez. David Dellucci is on the DL for the Indians, so after Grady Sizemore, they've had to make two outfielders out of Trot Nixon, Jason Michaels, Franklin Gutierrez and Ben Francisco. Nixon probably has little left and Michaels is a fourth outfielder who hasn't played well recently. Gutierrez and Francisco have played well, but both are unproven and Francisco isn't very likely to keep it up. So the Indians definitely can use Lofton, who's still an on-base threat. The Tribe optioned Francisco to Class AAA Buffalo. They will presumably play Lofton
in a corner and let Gutierrez play in the other corner most of the time.

The Indians acquired Ramirez, 22, last year for Bob Wickman. He has shown pretty much every offensive tool you could hope for this year - power (32 extra-base hits), contact (.303 batting average), plate discipline (53 walks against 63 strikeouts) - and has steadily improved as he's moved up the chain. He's not great defensively, and there have been rumblings that he may move to another position, but his bat may well be good enough to use at third base, say. He's a high price to pay for a complementary player like Lofton, but as the Scott Linebrink deal showed, it's a seller's market.

The Pirates really need to trade some of their veteran players, if the trades so far are any indication of what they can get - Ramirez is far from a sure thing, but he would be one of the top five prospects in the Pirates' system.

-P- The Braves have supposedly offered Jarrod Saltalamacchia, pitching prospect Matt Harrison and high-upside shortstop prospect Elvis Andrus for Mark Teixeira. Whew.

Jamie Moyer strikes out two.
Blah. And that was the good part of the Pirates' lineup.

Radar by Jamie Moyer
Isn't it funny to see the guy with the radar gun and walkie-talkie in the seats behind home plate clocking every pitch and then calling them in? He looks like a traffic cop radioing in car speeds for a Banksville Road speed trap. Why does anyone need to clock Jamie Moyer? Of course he just retired the side in order to start the game...

Michael Bourn
Here's your first hand look at Bourn. I've always liked him myself.

JVB
Looking sharp as ever.

by matskralc on Jul 27, 2007 7:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
He's got nothing.

by Charlie on Jul 27, 2007 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You know what, though
I root for him harder than I do for just about anybody else in the entire organization. In a Craig-Wilson-screwed-by-his-own-employers sort of way.

by matskralc on Jul 27, 2007 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

On that note
Awesome to see him come back and punch out Howard there.

by matskralc on Jul 27, 2007 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hot damn
That was just a mean pitch to Burrell there for another K.

Ryan Howard
Can't wait for him to bat against Van B in a selfish fantasy way

by JimBibbySweat on Jul 27, 2007 7:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Groan
I really thought JVB was gonna rally and unbury himself there, but the seeing-eye single did him in.

Ugh
Some of these at-bats are painful.

by Charlie on Jul 27, 2007 7:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

There's a reason . . .
. . . I can't stand to watch this team any more.  I can go to Carolina League games and watch hitters who have more of a clue than the Pirates' hitters.

by WTM on Jul 27, 2007 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plus
I bet most of those Carolina League players at least pretend like they want to be there.

Jose Diaz
He Wilbur, what can you tell us about Jose Diaz, who won a game for earlier this week.

by azibuck on Jul 27, 2007 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Diaz
I'm going to write something about him this weekend or early next week. John Setzler saw him play for Hickory and told me that, after some early jitters, he basically had no problem with the toughest lineup in the Sally League. We'll see whether this continues in Lynchburg.

by Charlie on Jul 27, 2007 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well . . .
. . . that's more than I know already.

One semi-related note--Jim Callis at BA said in a chat today that he's working on top prospect lists for the VSL and DSL that he hopes to be able to publish this fall.  Since the Pirates' affiliates are dominating both leagues, it'll be interesting to see whether there are any real prospects.

by WTM on Jul 27, 2007 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No kidding
JVB's teammates did him no favors after that long first inning.

Trade talk
If the Pirates sent Van Benschoten to Atlanta for Saltalamacchia, would it would be the longest transaction in MLB history?

by JimBibbySweat on Jul 27, 2007 7:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably
for transactions involving two players. It would probably be one of the most confusing trades in MLB history.

by Charlie on Jul 27, 2007 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow
Bourn's fast.

by Charlie on Jul 27, 2007 7:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't get it.
A slow guy (Paulino) on 1st. One out (after Jack Ks). A sub-par guy on deck (McLouth).
Why waste an out with a sac bunt. You might as well take your chances with JVB batting. It's not like having the guy on 2nd to end the inning is better than having him at 1st.
Am I the only one thinking that?

JVB bunting
I agree Utes, the only thing I can think of is the Bucs want JVB concentrating on pitching. JVB is probably one of our best hitters, though

by JimBibbySweat on Jul 27, 2007 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Concentration...
Well, the concentrating doesn't seem to be helping him this inning.
-BB to Howard
-homer by Burrell
-BB to Dobbs

They might as well let him hit. Who knows... maybe he'll pull a John Maine and launch a bomb.

"Wait till next year... again" Win Or Go Home

by UtesFan89 on Jul 27, 2007 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Concentration
And now an RBI double.
As for giving it back... at least the Pirates would get on the board. And if the pitcher launched a homer, maybe the rest of the team would feel some sort of fire to go prove that they're better batters than him.
... Or they'd be embarrassed to the point of not coming out the next inning... but I'm hoping that wouldn't be the case.

Why
is Ryan Howard, of all people, the only guy who's remotely being fooled by JVB?

by Charlie on Jul 27, 2007 7:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, actually
Howard walked this time, but he was pretty confused early in the count.

Oh my, that's gone. 4-0.

Giving up runs in the 1st inning, I mean?

70 pitches and they're still no outs in the third
Colborn talked with Bucs announcers the whole bottom of second inning. Interesting look into Colborn's thinking

by JimBibbySweat on Jul 27, 2007 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jose Castillo
If I was a fielder behind JVB I'd probably be thinking about how much my portfolio went down today. I can only imagine what Castillo is thinking.

by JimBibbySweat on Jul 27, 2007 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John Wehner
Currently being very critical of the Pirates for continuing to run JVB out there. Is it just me, or do the Pirates' announcers as a whole seem to be a lot more vocally critical of the organization than we're used to?

by matskralc on Jul 27, 2007 8:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention
I don't dislike Wehner nearly as much as I used to. He seems to have really turned a corner or something.

by UtesFan89 on Jul 27, 2007 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The ball slipped out of JVB's hand
...maybe because he was falling off the mound or something. It landed about 15 feet in front of the plate and it counted as a ball. You'll probably see it on some blooper reels.

by Charlie on Jul 27, 2007 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

6-0
Man, JVB has no business in a big-league rotation.

by Charlie on Jul 27, 2007 8:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

True
But he's not really in one.

by matskralc on Jul 27, 2007 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...
He's not anymore.
The much more deserving (please note the sarcasm) Tony Armas is now in.

Triple-A for JVB
No way the Pirates can keep him around for the good of his psyche. I feel bad for JVB. It's too late to turn him back into a hitter probably, he's had enough surgery for a lifetime, he never really pitched a lot of innings in college -- he was a closer, he's with an organization reknown for not helping develop pitchers, he's even making excuses about how no one helped him though he went 5-0 to start his Double-A career and started Altoona's first ever playoff game, etc. Have I missed anything?

Ryan Howard up against Tony Armless with one out and the bases juiced.

Did somebody slip another game on at FSN?
I think I just saw Armless strike Howard out.

Uh
What was with the slow-no replay of the guy in the stands looking totally zonked out?

by matskralc on Jul 27, 2007 8:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeh, funny
I didn't know if I was supposed to look at the zombie or the Pirates fan in front of him who had no reaction to Howard's striking out.

by JimBibbySweat on Jul 27, 2007 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ugh
JVB and Armless doing what they do best. I don't know why I continue to watch this.

by Charlie on Jul 27, 2007 8:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You know
What frustrates me the most about this team is that I sit there at work all day looking forward to crashing in front of the TV at 7:00 that night to watch my Buccos, and the game's always over before Jeopardy! is.

by matskralc on Jul 27, 2007 8:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Top 3 bloopers thus far
#3. Paulino not getting out of his crouch and throwing the ball back to JVB on Bourn's steal

#2. Phillies not advancing on Paulino's passed ball (it wasn't ruled a passed ball obviously)

#1. JVB's pitch that landed halfway to homeplate (I know he tried to stop his pitch purposely. That's the way you get hurt).

Any others?

by JimBibbySweat on Jul 27, 2007 8:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The pitchers must love...
sitting on the bench for 10 pitches before coming back out to the mound.
Especially when it takes someone like Armas 20+ pitches to get 2 outs... which involves K'ing Howard with the bases loaded, and then walking Burrell (and therefore walking in a run) right after that.

Holy crap...
The Phils just went 1-2-3 for the first time in the game... of course, it was the 7-8-9 hitters.
Through 4 innings...
# of Pirates hits: 1
# of hits by Jamie Moyer: 1

# of Pirates rbis: 0
# of rbis by Moyer: 1

That's exciting.

Just hope the Bucs pick up Toronto's 24-year-old left-handed power-hitting Adam Lind, OF, at the deadline.

Is he seriously the best pinch-hitter the Buccos have available?
Seriously?

The Pirates are on the board
thanks to the sub-club committee of Phelps, Castillo and Paulino (with aid from Greg Dobbs).
1st and 3rd... no outs.
But Wilson, Kata and McLouth suck.
So nothing came to be of the opportunity.

Off-topic
The Padres just traded a 26-year old AAA reliever to the Diamondbacks for OF/2 Scott Hairston.
Dang... by the time DL decides to get involved in the trading game... it'll all be over with all the teams getting someone they wanted. Hopefully something happens soon.

Meh
8-1 in the fifth.
1 out. Players on the corners after Jack's error.

Here's hoping for a trade... soon.
Maybe even an overhaul.
That'd be good.

I wonder
if the indians were looking specifically to get a top of the lineup, speedy/on base corner outfielder, or just a hitter to count on?

Could Nady have broght back the same prospects?

by The New Guy on Jul 28, 2007 1:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i suppose
it was possible, considering they were looking for corner outfield help, though lofton gives them a nice veteran presence and some base stealing ability.

nady would've brought back something decent, i think, but not quite what texas got.

Ramirez
He will never find a defensive position and will be a DH in the AL. We have several of those now.

by buccoben on Jul 28, 2007 3:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I dunno.
His defense has improved a bunch this year. And Victor Martinez is a bad defensive catcher, but he's allowed to play there. If you have someone who can handle the position at all and they can hit, they should be allowed to play there. Everything I've read about Ramirez recently suggests he can stick there, although no one thinks he's going to be great.
