Youman Dropped From Rotation

Shane Youman has been dropped from the rotation in order to make way for Matt Morris, the Post-Gazette reports. This means Tony Armas is still in the rotation.

Disregard Armas' one good start ever a few days ago, and Youman has actually had the best ERA of any Pirate starter over the past month except Paul Maholm. Still, I can't bring myself to care much that Youman's being bumped to the bullpen, even though it's a typically short-sighted decision by the Pirates. For his career, Youman has 20 strikeouts and 23 walks in 55 innings. That won't get the job done in the long term, and there's nothing in his minor-league record that suggests those rates are going to improve. He's a marginal player and he probably always will be.

If there's any reason to be upset by this move, it isn't that the Pirates control Youman's rights for the next several years and Armas' for only the next two months. It's that Youman's a better option than Armas right now, and I'm not positive he's worse than Morris, either. If the Pirates got a good pitcher to bump Youman, that'd be fine with me, even if the pitcher were about to leave via free agency. The problem is that Tony Armas isn't a good pitcher. He didn't look much different in July, when he had a 0.75 ERA, than he did before that, and he still has a 6.31 ERA for the season.

Well, Armas could still clear waivers and if he strings together a couple good starts, a contender might send us a middling prospect for the rental.

i knew
before that game even started that youman would be playing for his rotation spot. and that he probably pitched his way out (though i, too, disagree with the move).

sure, youman's numbers aren't great, and based on that he should be having more starts like his STL and COL than like the others, but hey, as long as he's pitching well and we aren't getting blown away in his starts, aren't the pirates at least believers in 'if it aint broke don't fix it"? isn't this the same team that let Bucking Furnitz "hit" his way out of a slump?

The good news for me is ...
I get to see Youmans pitch in the makeup DH with the Giants. Story also says Maholm, Gorzo and Morris will pitch the series vs. the Giants right before that. So let's see, who does that leave to pitch the OTHER game of the DH? Well, there'd be Snell, and ... Armas. Oh, that would be beautiful. Youmans and Armas. If BB hasn't hit the big one by then, he'll hit eight in that DH.

Much Earlier
BP wrote before the season began that Shane Youman was as good or better than both Tony Armas and Shawn Chacon, and the Pirates were wasting their time and money putting the latter two in their rotation.  Now Shane Youman, who is decidedly mediocre, is as good as three of our highest payed players/pitcher...

from
the yahoo! game preview....

"I'm excited about getting back to the NL Central and getting some better defense and some young guys out there who are looking to play hard," said Morris...

does matt know where he's been traded?

Well
First of all you kinda have to stay motivated in a new environment, and secondly I guess he falls for the old cliché of bad hitting = good defense.
Dave Littlefield's shit doesn't work in the regular season

The eyes of the baseball world
will be on Pittsburgh tonight as Matt Morris makes his ... what? A-Rod did what? Huh. You know he just did it to detract from Matt's debut, the attention whore. Now as I was saying: Matt Morris makes his ... what? Bonds needs HOW many? Huh. You know he'll hit two tonight just to detract from Matt's debut, the attention whore ...

this
should be a really great game tonight. cough cough
  1. bautista .738 OPS
  2. castillo .641 OPS
  3. paulino  .659 OPS
  4. mcclouth .652 OPS
  5. pitcher
  6. izturis  .592 OPS
  7. sanchez  .740 OPS

Yay...
Bautista leads off the 2nd with a double.
And is promptly stranded, as Castillo grounds out to the pitcher, Paulino K's (looking... all 3 strikes were taken and according to ESPN Gamecast clearly strikes) and McLouth K's.

Does anyone on this team even know how to use a baseball bat?

Morris with a solo shot!
Maybe the Buccos will let the pitchers bat more often now.

Let me rephrase my previous question...
Does anyone other than the pitcher now how to use a baseball bat?

sure they do
oh, you mean do they know how to use it to hit a baseball. well, no,not really.

by Geeves28 on Aug 4, 2007 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually...
I'm not sure they know how to use a bat in any other way either. For example... pulling a Roger Clemens and throwing it at others... I don't think they could effectively do that either.

Bay...
has had 124 at-bats where hit/out came on the pitch after a 1-2 count. In those situations, he's 22-123, with 1 walk and 63 K's!
63...

Roster move:
Bayliss back down, Osoria comes up instead. Not sure who gets booted off the roster to make room for our six-fingered man...

surprise
capps give up a HR to freaking keppinger, so they leave him in to pitch to dunn. another HR. what a shock.

Algebra for Dummies
The Transitive Property of David Littlefield:

If Matt Capps pitches to Jeff Keppinger and Jeff Keppinger hits a homer, then Jeff Keppinger is greater than Matt Capps and we should trade Matt Capps for Jeff Keppinger.
