Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Pittsburgh vs. Houston, 14 September 2007

8:05 PM, FSNP, WPGB

Ian Snell (9-12, 4.00) vs. Roy Oswalt (14-7, 3.41). Here's the box.

Relative to yesterday, at least, today's a slow news day. The big news is that Jays director of player personnel Tony LaCava and Mets assistant GM Tony Bernazard have interviewed for the Pirates' GM job. Chris Antonetti has declined to be interviewed, unfortunately. You've already heard about LaCava, but Bernazard is a new name, at least for me. I don't know what his approach is, but he might be able to improve the Pirates' reputation among players and agents. One agent recently said that he was glad to have Dave Littlefield out of his Rolodex; Bernazard doesn't sound like the kind of guy you say that about. However, he did really annoy Carlos Delgado when Delgado was considering coming to the Mets, so who knows.

Is that Cody Ransom?
What's he doing back in the big leagues?

The Astros

Leadoff batters
are OPSing .526 and .629. This is AAAA ball.
Dave Littlefield's shit doesn't work in the regular season

I checked Morgan's OPS+ yesterday
and it was something like 44. If he makes the roster next year, I hope the fans enjoy the occasional highlight catches, because the price of those is that he will absolutely kill the team with his bat.

small sample size!
Maybe we can just save him for September when we're out of it.  Either that or he can miraculously learn to hit.  Because these highlight-reel quality catches are getting more than occasional.  That was miraculous.  Probably because he took a crappy route to it, but whatever.  Mercy.

Wow, Bucs Dugout and say what a great catch
Nyjer Morgan just made with the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning against the Astros. Over the head and running up against the right-center field fence. Amazing! Even though I have Wigginton on my fantasy team.

Fantasy
Yeah, I've got Oswalt, and I'm so pleased he's got his own sub club giving him all this run support tonight.

There goes your Oswalt "W"
courtesy of Jose Bautista's shot down the left field line...shoulda left Lee Harvey in there.

Positive sign
Anybody notice that, according to the official site, in a move "dictated by the arrival of" Coonelly, Van Benschoten will replace Armas in the rotation?  The idea, of course, is that Armas will be gone next year and VB may be an option.  I'm not optimistic about VB, but this is the complete opposite of the consistent policy under DL of trying to eek out that one extra meaningless win instead of focusing on getting better down the road.

There was also one stunning revelation:  Bay, who met Coonelly yesterday, has never met McClatchy.

Van Ben has just looked so bad in the majors
but his minor league numbers at Triple-A suggest that there's still hope for him (I just can't get that image of him bouncing/rolling the ball to home plate in Philadelphia out of my head). Coonelly was interviewed during the fifth inning of the Bucs' broadcast tonight. Said he wants a GM pronto, thinks the team has a core worth keeping and wants Pittsburgh to have more than a two or three year window of contention. Nothing major but nice to hear.

Bernazard note
I sat next to Bernazard at a game in 2006 when the Mets were the parent affiliate and talked to him most of the night.
Bank on an increase in the Latin market (yay) and a love of college pitching (boo).
He seemed really committed to Minaya's program and I did not come away with a feeling that he would do more than minor tweaking of the Met handbook.

Chacon is a thrower not a pitcher
No wonder he lobbied for an extension when he did. He's stunk ever since, whether that's a result of his "trick" knee or not who knows, I just can't wait till he's no longer a Pirates pitcher. Too bad Capps can't pitch more than one inning.

Here another name ...
... and a really, really good one.

Another name soon could be added to Coonelly's potential candidate list.

An industry source yesterday indicated Mike Rizzo has interest in the Pirate job.

Rizzo, who as Arizona's scouting director drafted many of the young players who have helped the Diamondbacks climb to the top of the National League West, is the Washington Nationals' assistant general manager and vice-president of baseball operations.
