Around SBN: Josh Hamilton Reportedly Seen Drinking In Dallas Bar

Sean Burnett, Pirates Mow Down Yankees

8-0. You know, I look at Sean Burnett's performance this Spring and wonder whether it's the result of voodoo, or bribery, or an elaborate joke being played on the Bucs by other teams, or just more anecdotal evidence in support of the maxim that Spring Training stats don't matter, but regardless, he's been a great story. So far, Burnett has struck out eight batters in ten innings, walked only two, and allowed one run. There wasn't much reason to think he could be effective against Class AAA hitters, much less major leaguers, even before his 184 arm surgeries,  and his last two seasons were terrible. I'm about 98% sure he'd get shelled if allowed to pitch out of the Pirates' pen in the regular season. But part of me is rooting for him to make it anyway.

Sean Burnett
I think he`s earned a spot in the `pen. He might get slammed around once the real games begin, but there is something to be said for his perseverance. It`s a 162-game season, so it won`t be long before the AAA reliever express is in operation anyway.

burnett
I'm rooting for Burnett, but didn't he have a great spring training in 2007?

The Bullpen Might Just Be What Burnett Needs
Maybe getting experience out of the 'pen will be just what Burnett needs. From what I understand he has been told to throw hard for one inning and not to "save" anything. Maybe getting him to focus on just getting 3 batters out will allow him to develop. Who knows?

40 man
Since it sounds like Juan Perez is probably going to be put on the 60 day DL...and that BH Kim will probably not make the team...there's going to be room on the 40 man to add burnett back on.

Do we need a third pen lefty?
I guess I can see a case for using Burnett as a Villone-style multi-inning lefty.

Give the man credit: He's looked a lot better this spring than he has at any other post-injury point in his career. I hope he can keep it up.
