Pirates Send Burnett, Gorzelanny to Minors

Whew. Well, this simplifies the rotation battle, doesn't it? With Sean Burnett and Tom Gorzelanny in the minors, only Ian Snell, Victor Santos, Ryan Vogelsong and Brandon Duckworth are competing for the last two jobs. Snell is very likely to get one of them, and I would be surprised if Santos doesn't get the other - Vogelsong has not pitched well this spring, and I still can't believe they'd give the job to Duckworth, a 30-year-old nobody who isn't even on the 40-man roster.

Brad Eldred, Rajai Davis, Carlos Maldonado, Gookie Dawkins, Jason Alfaro, Nerio Rodriguez, Matt Whiteside, Ron Chiavacci and Yurendell DeCaster were all sent to the minors as well. None were expected to compete for a big-league job except DeCaster, who might've had a clearer shot at the 25th-man Mackowiak-lite role if he hadn't been playing in the WBC.

The Pirates evidently haven't decided much about their bullpen spots, since a lot of candidates are still in camp. So are Nate McLouth, Jose Bautista, Mike Edwards and Jose Hernandez. I think, ultimately, that the Pirates will send McLouth and Bautista back to Indianapolis.
