Even given that the Pirates' ownership is not particularly interested in building a winning team in Pittsburgh, I don't understand this extension. Isn't Dave Littlefield massively unpopular among the fans, or is that just on the internet? Because if he is indeed massively unpopular, it seems like terrible PR to give him an unnecessary contract extension on the first day of the regular season. Or is this an attempt to convince the fans that the Pirates' ownership loves the moves Littlefield made this offseason? I don't get it.
