News Roundup

-P- According to the Post-Gazette, Tom Gorzelanny and Mike Gonzalez are both probably done for the year. Neither has any ligament damage, however.

-P- In the comments, Greg notices that John Perrotto is repeating the rumor that Dave Littlefield may be fired at the end of the year. (As Billy points out, the Post-Gazette has reported that's not happening.)

I'll believe it when I see it, and anyway I'm not sure it would mean much even if it happened. The Pirates' owners simply have different goals than the fans. If Littlefield gets fired, it'll probably be specifically because he wasted money on Jeromy Burnitz and Joe Randa, not because he has led the Pirates to five straight losing seasons. The Pirates aren't going to hire a G.M. to do what Dayton Moore is apparently being allowed to do in Kansas City, which is to be free to rebuild the franchise from the ground up. I suspect if the Pirates got a new general manager, the Drive for 75 would continue, and so would signings of Burnitz- and Randa-like free agents.

-P- Here's a profile of Andrew McCutchen from the Altoona Curve's website. McCutchen went 2 for 3 with a walk yesterday.

-P- With three hits yesterday, Freddy Sanchez is batting .349.

-P- Welcome, Baseball Prospectus readers. BP is praising those of you who posted in the Bucs Dugout Community Projections before the season started - be sure to check that out.
