The Blue Jays have signed first baseman Lyle Overbay to a four-year, $24 million extension. Overbay would've been eligible for free agency after the 2008 season, by which point he'll be 31. I'm not sure what I think of this deal. Overbay isn't old, but he's very slow, so there's a chance he might decline quickly in the next few years. If I were Toronto, I'd probably want to take him to arbitration for another year before I started talking with him about a long-term deal. I don't know - maybe Kevin Young has made me too wary of four-year, $24 million extensions for good-but-not-great first basemen in their late 20s.
Relatedly, has anyone seen the ZiPS projections for next year's Blue Jays? That's some offense they have up there.
