Pirates Cut Herrera, Bullington, Others

First round of cuts today:

Cuban defector Yoslan Herrera was among eight players the Pirates reassigned this morning to minor-league camp, trimming their spring training roster to 61...

The other cuts were pitchers Bryan Bullington, John Van Benschoten, Brad Lincoln, Michael Tejera and Kip Bouknight, and catchers Steve Lerud and David Parrish. Bullington and Van Benschoten, each working his way back from arm surgeries, were assigned to the Class AAA Indianapolis roster.

No big surprises here. Herrera isn't as polished enough to join the Pirates right now, Tejera and Bouknight are minor-league filler and never had any chance of making the big-league team, Bullington and Van Benschoten are still recovering from injury, and Lincoln is currently hurt. Lerud and Parrish were just in camp to catch all the extra pitchers. Lerud will probably start the year with Lynchburg and Parrish, a non-prospect, will likely spend the year in Altoona, now that Neil Walker has moved to third base.

Also, Serguey Linares has finally reported to camp.
